The body of an unidentified adult male was found in Rector Park, near the Esplanade, a few minutes before 7am on Thursday morning. “We received a 911 call about an unresponsive, unconscious male on a park bench,” an NYPD spokesman told the Broadsheet. “Officers responded and found the subject sitting upright, bleeding from the nose and mouth.”
The spokesman added, “the person, who appeared to be in his mid-30s, was hunched over, and the responding officers called for an ambulance. Emergency medical technicians pronounced him dead at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, as well as helping to make an identification.”
“Preliminary notes from the field investigation do not indicate foul play,” the spokeman said. The presence of blood does not necessarily imply violence, because some medical conditions (including drug overdoses) can cause bleeding from the nose and mouth prior to death.
A Battery Park City resident whose apartment overlooks the scene (and who asked not to be named), said, “there was a pile of purple blankets spread around the bench, which suggested to me that the person intended to spend the night there. Then the police and paramedics cordoned off the end of the park with yellow tape and took him away. It was very sad.”
