John Alton Wingert, 79, died unexpectedly on November 26, 2022. He was born and grew up in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
John graduated from Hamilton College in 1965 and then went on to General Theological Seminary where he graduated and was ordained as priest in 1969. He served many parishes in Maryland at first. While at his first parish in Maryland, he was a Chesapeake Bay oyster man and crabber. Transferring into the secular world, John continued his ministry in Maryland, then in upstate New York, and finally in Maine on Sundays while he worked in the secular world. He worked as a data programmer, and also worked for many years at Westinghouse as a telecommunications administrator. John was called to be interim priest at St John’s Church in Bangor, Maine for several years in 2006. This was a highlight of his career.
He and his wife, Jacquie (Rueff) Wingert, were married for 54 years and enjoyed traveling up and down the east coast to visit friends and family. John is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sue Halsey, his nephews Brett and Eric Halsey and their families, and cousins Carole Brake and Charlene Stoner and their families.
A Funeral Service and Eucharist will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at St. John’s in Bangor (225 French Street). Jacquie and family invite friends to share conversation, memories and refreshments in the undercroft of the church after the service from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, make a gift to an SPCA of your choice and please take a walk down your favorite path or trail or go fishing…... and remember John. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
May his soul and the souls of the all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Faithfully in Christ,
