With sadness we share the news of the death of Henry Russell “Russ” Worthington III, 78, on May 11, 2022. He was a former member of diocesan staff, serving as Administrative Assistant to the Canon to the Ordinary and Director of Congregational Development from 2005 to 2008. He also worked for a time at St. Paul’s, Chatham as parish administrator.

Family and friends are invited to his memorial service on June 11 at 11 AM at Liebenzell Retreat Center, 13 Heath Lane, Schooley’s Mountain, NJ 07870.

Born in West Chester, PA, Russ graduated Cherry Hill High School in 1962 and went on to The College of New Jersey. In 1964 he joined the Coast Guard as a Radioman aboard the USCGC Halfmoon, going through training in Cape May before serving in Vietnam in 1967-1968. From 1968-1998 he worked as a manager for Bell Telephone and AT&T.
Russ lived in the Washington, DC area until 1982, where he was active in the emergency preparedness squad as well as a barbershop quartet and the Alexandria Harmonizers barbershop chorus. Then he moved back to New Jersey, first to Long Valley and then to Hackettstown. He was very involved at Church of the Messiah, Chester, and at St. James', Hackettstown. For 12 years he served as lay reader and Eucharistic minister at the House of the Good Shepherd in Hackettstown.

During his retirement his daughter gifted him with genealogy management software and he became very involved in the genealogical community, doing everything from beta testing software, to co-hosting the YouTube show Mondays with Myrt, to teaching classes at genealogy conferences and at Heath Village.

Russ is survived by his wife Patricia (nee Applebey), his daughters Carrie (Patrick) and Jennie, his stepson Justin, his granddaughters Anna, Samantha and Bethany, and his brother Richard.

Memorial Donations may be made to The Coast Guard Foundation, St. Jude’s Hospital, or the American Cancer Society.

Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended. When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death, we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven. Lord, grant eternal rest, forever in the radiance of your light. Amen.
