Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am saddened to share with you that the Rev. Dr. Carol Jablonski died Monday morning at a hospice near her home in Asheville, North Carolina.

Carol earned her PhD in Communication at Purdue University in 1979, and was a revered scholar, teacher, colleague, and faculty leader, serving at six universities. She left the professorate to answer a call to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church, but during her summer breaks, between semesters at Virginia Theological Seminary, she taught classes and coached PhD students at the University of South Florida.

She received her MDiv Cum Laude from VTS (2006), where she was awarded the Harris Prize for church leadership. As part of her preparation for ministry, she also served as a chaplain intern at Duke University Medical Center and delighted in her internship at St. Margaret’s near Dupont Circle.

Carol was ordained to the diaconate on June 10, 2006, by the Rt. Rev. John Lipscomb in Tampa, FL, and then ordained to the priesthood by the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry in Durham, NC, on February 4, 2007. She served as Curate, then Associate Rector, at St. Stephen’s Durham, NC (2006-2009). Carol was then called to be the sixth rector of St. Andrew’s, College Park, MD (2009-2016).

Carol and her husband, the Rev. Dn. Ty Jones, “retired” to Asheville, NC in 2016, but both continued to help out in their calls as needs presented. Carol served as interim Priest-in-Charge at St. George’s in Asheville (2017-2018), Interim Rector at St. James, Hendersonville (2019-2020), and as a supply priest for six other congregations in the Diocese of Western North Carolina.

Carol and Ty enjoyed thirty-seven years of love and marriage, embracing life in the mountains, and treasured vacation trips to national parks. In her later years, she became a skilled quilter and knitter of beautiful, useable, wearable things.

More details will be provided in the coming days about a Celebration of Life service. Please hold Ty and his extended family in your prayers.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Carol.

Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold,

a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming.

Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace,

and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Faithfully,

The Rev. Canon Augusta Anderson
