Dec. 6, 2023

Neighbors,

Two years ago, the Board of Supervisors directed county staff to identify funding and projects to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety – a top priority for the county and for Hunter Mill District. The Board set a goal to identify $100 million over a six-year period and directed staff to compile a list of potential projects, develop a prioritization process and consider maintenance needs. At yesterday’s Board meeting, we approved more than $26 million toward this goal. The Board previously approved allocations of $5 million on Nov. 1, 2022, and $25 million on April 11, 2023. You can find more details here (Action 8) including countywide funding allocations.

The Priority Active Transportation projects that will be funded in Hunter Mill District with yesterday’s approved allocation:

  • Frying Pan Road and Greg Roy Lane/Dakota Lakes Drive: Upgrade existing marked crosswalk with pedestrian refuge island and/or rectangular rapid-flashing beacons. Funding: $700,000
  • Glade Drive and Charterhouse Circle: Upgrade existing marked crosswalk with pedestrian refuge island and/or curb extension(s). Funding: $450,000
  • Lawyers Road and Blue Spruce Road: Add new marked crosswalk with pedestrian refuge island and curb ramps. Possible curb extension or channelized right-turn island. Funding: $650,000
  • Colts Neck Road from Reston Parkway to Jackstay Terrace Study: Study for approximately 2,400 linear feet of trail along Colts Neck Road from Reston Parkway to approximately 200 feet south of Jackstay Terrace. Funding: $150,000

Funded maintenance projects in Hunter Mill include:

  • Sunrise Valley Dr (Edmund Hally Dr to Glader Dr). Funding: $112,300
  • Sunrise Valley Dr (Oldfield Dr to Robert Fulton Dr). Funding: $22,389

Funded trail maintenance projects:

  • Renovate section of Foxstone/Waverly/Wolf Trap Trail. Funding: $149,000
  • Renovate section of Peterson Lane Trail. Funding $90,000
  • Renovate section of Nottoway Trail. Funding: $40,000

There are still miles to go (pun intended) but I am hopeful that with continued community engagement, the commitment by the Board of Supervisors, as well as much-needed support from VDOT and the state, we will make our roads, trails, crosswalks and sidewalks safer. Walter

The Fairfax County Police Department is ramping up DUI (driving under the influence) enforcement to ensure safe roads during the holidays. Through Dec. 29, the DUI Enforcement Squad is increasing its presence on county roads to promote sober driving, and pinpoint and remove impaired drivers.

  • Don’t drink and drive: If you’ve been drinking, do not get behind the wheel.
  • Plan ahead: If you plan to consume alcohol, arrange for a designated driver, use a ride-sharing service, or take a taxi.
  • Help friends and family: If you are with someone who has been drinking, do not allow them to drive and assist in arranging a sober ride for them.
  • Be a responsible party hosts: If you are hosting an event where alcohol is served, ensure that your guests leave with a sober driver.
  • Report impaired drivers: While on the road, if you suspect someone is driving under the influence, please report them by calling 9-1-1 for emergencies or non-emergency dispatch at 703-691-2131.
  • It is crucial for parents to have conversations with their children about the dangers of impaired driving.
