LTSS Center partners with Community Catalyst on family caregiver support | |
In 2020, an estimated 53 million people were providing informal, usually unpaid care and support to aging family members and family members with disabilities. The federal Administration for Community Living has awarded the nonprofit Community Catalyst a four-year grant to develop, test, and disseminate new approaches for increasing awareness of family caregivers and building support for their unique concerns. As part of that grant, the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston will evaluate these efforts. | |

UMass Boston gerontology graduate students along with faculty and staff members delivered more than 60 presentations and posters at the 2023 annual scientific meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. The meeting took place in early November in Tampa, Florida. | |
Pension Action Center awarded two
grants for education, advocacy

The Gerontology Institute’s Pension Action Center (PAC) has been awarded two concurrent grants funded by the Investor Protection Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to independent investor education, research, and support. The two projects build on the expertise of PAC’s staff, who focus primarily on helping workers recover their retirement income benefits, while broadening the center’s work to include more education, which is part of its mission, says Tyler Compton, PAC’s lead attorney (right). | |

Raad Alsowayigh joins PAC as staff attorney | |
|
Raad Alsowayigh has joined the Pension Action Center as its staff attorney, responsible for managing the client caseload and supervising the undergraduate interns who staff the center’s help line.
Alsowayigh graduated in May 2024 from Boston College Law School. As a law student he was drawn to public interest work. “I like the motive and values that drive this job, helping retired people who are struggling to collect their pension funds,” he says of his new position.

Nursing home improvement group releases action plan | The finance committee of the national Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition has released its action plan. The committee, co-chaired by Marc Cohen, co-director of the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston (left), and David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School, focused its plan on policies to encourage nursing homes to make their physical plants feel more like homes. | |
