Two Decades Later, A Familiar Face Becomes New Principal

For Joe McQueen, becoming the new principal at The Baby Fold’s Hammitt School isn’t just a career move — it feels like coming home.

Joe’s journey in education began two decades ago, right here at The Baby Fold, when he worked in the residential program. Back then, as a college student unsure of his path, he discovered his calling.

"That experience really opened my eyes," Joe recalls. "I was so inspired by the children and the therapeutic approach being used to support them. I knew this population was ‘my people,’ and I wanted to be the best educator I could be for them."

After earning his special education teaching license and gaining years of experience, Joe jumped at the chance to return to The Baby Fold when the Hammitt School principal role opened up. "It truly shaped how I work with children today, so coming back felt like returning to 'the Fold'," he says.

In his first year back, Joe’s top priority is simple but powerful: building relationships. "Positive connections can make a huge difference," he explains. "I want to get to know both students and staff, to understand and help shape the climate and culture of the school."

One of his favorite moments in the school day happens during broader school experiences. "Lunch, playground, and PE time are the best. That’s when little pieces of everyone’s personalities really shine through. It’s such a natural, fun way to connect with kids and adults."

Joe approaches supporting students with unique learning needs by seeing them as individuals first. "It’s so important to look beyond the paperwork and really get to know who they are — what they enjoy, how they learn best. Meeting them where they are is where real progress begins."

When he’s not at school, Joe describes himself as “low-key, maybe even a little boring,” though his hobbies — cooking, trying new foods, watching movies (especially sci-fi), and spending time with his kids and grandchild — paint a picture of someone who loves connection and creativity.

And despite his humble demeanor, Joe has a not-so-hidden talent: he loves public speaking. "I’ve given keynotes, presented at conferences, been a guest on podcasts around the world, and even wrote a book about it," he shares with a grin. Above all, Joe wants the world to see what he sees in special education students: limitless potential.

"Students in special education are so much more than a diagnosis or the challenges they face. They are lively, capable, and deeply unique individuals with incredible stories and talents. Walking alongside them is an honor — they teach us about resilience, creativity, and the power of human connection. They are extraordinary people."

Welcome home, Joe. We’re so glad to have you back.

Preparing for Success in the New School Year

Growing Together for Student Success

ï»żThe exceptional teachers at The Baby Fold’s Hammitt School, serving a 100% special education population, spent part of their Institute Days strengthening staff relationships.

This year, they embraced the theme ‘Building Our Nest’—a reflection of the school’s holistic approach that engages the body, heart, and mind to guide and foster both staff and student success. Activities included team building exercises, team bingo, and exploring the Enneagram, a powerful tool for building empathy, understanding ourselves and others.

Fostering these connections builds a foundation of trust and safety that supports year-round teamwork and mirrors the supportive environment they create for students every day!

Back to School Tips for Families

Back-to-school season brings both excitement and stress for kids and parents! Children look forward to seeing friends and meeting new teachers, while also adjusting to new routines. At the same time, parents work to coordinate schedules, manage family logistics, and provide the emotional support their children need.

With a little planning, you can help your child start the year feeling confident and ready to thrive.

Here are some tips from Baby Fold experts to help children transition smoothly from summer to the classroom:

  • Prepare for change: Talk early about school, teachers, routines, and new experiences.
  • Choices: Let children pick items (clothes, backpacks, etc.) to foster independence.
  • Keep it playful: Add fun to routines, like a silly song or turning tasks into games.
  • Prioritize connection: Provide a book, transitional item, or supportive adults for your child.
  • Balance nurture and structure: Combine hugs, snacks, and fun time with consistent routines and schedules.

With these strategies, you can help your child feel safe, supported, and ready to thrive as the school year begins!

Thanks to your giving heart, children and families receive the care they need.

With new, convenient ways to give, your impact can go even further.
