Castaway Critters' mission is to save the lives of, and provide new beginnings for, lost, sick and abandoned companion animals through rescue, rehabilitation, adoptions and spay/neuter programs.
We may not be able to solve all the world's problems, but by giving these deserving creatures a second chance, we offer them the opportunity to experience the joy of a loving home and the comfort of knowing they are safe and cherished.
Thank you for being part of the Castaway Critters family. We couldn't do what we do without you.

PROTECTING YOUR PET AND THOSE THAT ARE NOT SO FORTUNATE
Sasha and her four newborn kittens were recently surrendered to our care and are thankfully thriving. Their rescue is a huge relief, but they are the lucky ones. For every family we save, countless others are left struggling in the elements, facing increasing danger as winter sets in.
As the temperatures drop, keeping your furry friends safe and warm becomes essential. Never leave pets unattended in a car during cold weather, as vehicles quickly become refrigerators that can lead to hypothermia. Be vigilant about antifreeze, which is highly toxic but has a sweet smell that attracts pets; clean up any spills immediately and store containers securely. When walking outdoors, protect paws from ice, salt, and abrasive chemicals by using pet-safe booties or a protective balm before and after each outing, and be sure to wipe paws thoroughly. Check your car's wheel wells or hood for hiding cats before starting the engine.
We urge you to think about the vulnerable animals who are not fortunate enough to have a home of their own and ensure they have access to a safe, warm, and dry shelter. Building a simple, effective shelter is easier than you might think. Start with a waterproof structure, such as a repurposed 18-gallon plastic storage tote or an insulated doghouse. Crucially, the interior must be lined—we recommend rigid foam insulation board—to trap the animal's body heat. For bedding, use straw, which repels moisture and creates insulating air pockets. Avoid blankets and towels, as they wick moisture and will severely chill the animal when frozen, and NEVER, EVER use hay, which mildews quickly and provides inadequate warmth.

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL OF YOU!
The year is ending, and while the team at Castaway Critters is winding down an exhausting twelve months filled with challenges, some heartbreaks, and beautiful triumphs marked by happy meows and wagging tails, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude. We extend our deepest thanks to our dedicated community: our adopters, foster families, volunteers, veterinarians, donors, and our never-resting Operations Manager. All of your steadfast support manifests in countless ways—whether it's rushing an animal to the emergency room, donating supplies, fighting for an animal's life, fostering a pet in need, or sponsoring a crucial surgery. These acts of generosity are the engine of our rescue. Thanks to your compassion, many vulnerable animals were given the care, comfort, and second chance they desperately needed. We look forward to continuing this vital mission with you in the New Year, forever grateful for the community that makes miracles happen every single day.

WE WON'T STOP!!!
Our commitment to protecting vulnerable animals was recently tested by a horrifying incident: a cat found with a dart shot through his head. Responding immediately, our team discovered the cat had been shot at close range, the projectile missing his brain by a mere half inch. Miraculously, the cat—whom we've named Dart—was rushed to the hospital and is now nearly recovered, and the police were notified. This incident, combined with the recent, rare victory we secured—a court case with restitution against a hoarder—reinforces our fight. While legal wins like our court case are regrettably uncommon, we sincerely hope this one is another step in redefining the value and protection of animals who are abused, like Dart. Ultimately, we strive for a future where people think twice before treating these creatures as disposable objects.
