Khizr and Ghazala Khan visit Peabody

Many thanks to Khizr and Ghazala Khan for visiting our 8th Grade Government class on November 20th and signing copies of Mr. Khan's latest book, "This is Our Constitution," to give to our students! We were all thrilled to see that the book was dedicated to "all our nation's middle school students and their teachers - and especially to our friends in Mr. Merrick's class at the Peabody School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Your curiosity about our founding documents inspired us to write it. You are our heroes." It was a wonderful day!
Peabody Chorus Performs at UVA
We are thrilled that our Middle School Chorus performed at the UVA Lighting of the Lawn ceremony.

"Be the Light" was the theme for this year’s Lighting of the Lawn, a beloved and rollicking University of Virginia tradition that ebulliently marks an end to the semester and the start of the holiday season.

The chorus sang beautifully! To see the choir performing at Lighting of the Lawn last night, please visit  http://www.lightingofthelawn.com/  and start at about 31:45 on the video.
Visiting Author Kentrell Martin

On Wednesday, Peabody was excited to welcome author Kentrell Martin, who read to our PreK-3rd grade students from his book series, "Shelly's Adventures." Mr. Martin, whose brother is deaf, wrote the series so that he could introduce kids and parents to American Sign Language and the culture of the hearing impaired. He hopes the 20-book Shelly's Adventures series will help bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing world - he taught our students nearly 20 signs in ASL!

First Lego League wins 1st Place!

The Peabody "Octobots" team had a very full day in Richmond at the Lego League tournament on November 18th. They impressed the robot design judges with their interesting attachments, use of the ultrasonic and color sensors in combination for one of their missions and their use of the ultrasonic in getting the robot to navigate obstacles to the far side of the playing field for another. They made such a good impression on those judges that they WON FIRST PLACE in Robot Design!!!

Congratulations to Tristan Olowin, Kes Rodgers, Joshua O'Neill Rossouw, Ryan Kish, and Nicholas Wilbur.
World Peace Game

Our fifth grade students will be participating in the World Peace Game this spring and we are in need of your help!

As we prepare to offer this to our students, we need your help to build the board. Please see the sign-up genius for pieces needed for us to play the game and if you are willing donate anything, please drop it off in the main office. Used pieces are more than acceptable. Thanks!

This week in Middle School..

This week the Renaissance School’s Synthetic Biology class visited our 8th grade to help them perform a DNA extraction from their cheek cells. They learned how to precipitate DNA from a solution and remove it which requires careful pipetting to obtain only the amorphous DNA.  In two weeks our 8th grade will be traveling to Renaissance to learn how to insert genes into bacteria and grow them in Petri dishes.

Just a reminder that those donations received prior to December 31, 2017 receive a Peabody School credit card holder for your cell phone as a thank you!!!
