Sermon: "Standing in the Presence: Gabriel & Zechariah" November 27, 2022

Standing in the Presence: Gabriel & Zechariah

Luke 1:5-25

November 27, 2022

November 27, 2022 Worship Service

Ever the orderly, detailed writer, Luke likes to insert timelines into his stories. It is the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, and now Gabriel has another mission to complete. This time he is directed not toward the Temple in Jerusalem but to a young peasant girl living ninety miles north of Jerusalem in an insignificant village of no more than four hundred people. In fact, this hamlet in Galilee is regarded so dismissively that when Philip, who had become a follower of Jesus, went to his friend Nathaniel and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth," Nathaniel asked a bid incredulously, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:45-46).

Gabriel declares Mary as having "found favor with God" (Luke 1:28). Have you ever been so deep in thought or so engrossed in what you were doing that you were completely startled to hear out of nowhere, "Hey! What are you doing?" Did you jump? Were you frightened? Gabriel may have been enthusiastic and excited about greeting Mary. However, Mary was "perplexed" (Luke 1:29). So, Gabriel attempts to quiet those fears. And like Zechariah before her, informs Mary what is about to happen and what she should do. Unlike Zechariah, she needs no sign for this, but only asks how the impossible will be possible.

These stories are traditionally called the Annunciation with Gabriel, the Visitation with Elizabeth, and the Magnificat of Mary's song.

She consents to do God's will. Her blessing gives blessing to the world. May we be a fertile womb for the new thing that God wants to do in the world through us.

Attend Worship: Pastor Jason has encouraged an "A grade" of 90% worship attendance (missing less the 5 Sundays in a year). Next Steps Class Meets

Wednesday, December 7, 6 pm

As Prairie Avenue approaches its 100th anniversary, a new chapter begins. To develop a deeper discussion on the mission and call in the 21st Century, we continue a study of two books: Thrive by Ruth Fletcher, and Everywhere You Look by Tim Soerens. Chapters to be read in each: Thrive- Collaborating & Choosing; Everywhere: Learning from Local Heroes. You do not need to have read the materials to participate in the discussion. This is a church-wide conversation, open to all.

Use Your Gifts by sharing five acts of love and kindness each week
Serve God and neighbor by using your gifts and talents both inside and outside the walls of the church. Each of us have spiritual gifts and natural abilities to use to serve others and glorify God.

but also is your way of giving God priority in your life.
What we love is where we will spend first.
When we are able to give, it always deepens our faith

Thank You for your generosity!

The God you worship is always revealed through your words and actions. Awkward conversations (i.e. "Are you saved?") are not necessary when your words and actions reveal the God you seek to learn, love, and serve.

The Wise Men Begin Their Journeys...

To remind ourselves of the journey to meet Jesus during the season of advent, our Wise Men figurines travel to various places in Central Illinois on their journey. Each week during Advent we will post photographs of our wise men on their journey. Try and figure out where they have visited.

If you would like to "adopt a wise man" to take on a weekly journey, please sign up with Pastor Jason.

Elevator Modernization Work Begins

Work on making the necessary code upgrades for the new Otis Elevator has begun this week. Bodine Electric is installing the Add-A-Phase motors and separate service needs. The Church Council recently approved an elevator renovation and management firm, ATIS Elevator Inspections, LLC. to handle the day-to-day work of this modernization and to manage our elevator needs and issues following completion. With fire code regulations, it is hoped that any time when the elevator is out of service will be during the weeks in winter when congregation members who regularly use the service would not be in attendance due to the weather conditions, i.e. ice or snow days. We will let you know when it is anticipated the elevator is out of service.

The Power of Presence

At the end of October in Orlando, faint signs of Hurricane Ian remained: blue tarps on roofs, trees that broke through fences and walls, swamps and lakes with high water, and debris that needed to be removed. For the most part, though, the damage was hidden - there were few washed-out or blocked roads, most waters had receded, and destruction seemed surprisingly minor.
