Sunday Service December 3rd at 10:30am
Being a Catalyst: The Mystery and Power of Collective Action
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This one action sparked a boycott of the buses that lasted more than a year, a pivotal collective action that helped the civil rights movement gain traction. One moment, one person, one spark can ignite tremendous change but nothing happens in isolation. In the struggle for liberation, we explore the power and possibility of the collective. Rev. Eileen leads the service with Annette Wallace as Worship Associate.
Children preschool through 6th grade will go to their faith formation program after joys and sorrows.

Our Shared Values: We want to hear from you! |
What binds us together as a congregation and as Unitarian Universalists is our commitment to living our shared values. In 2021 we engaged in a process to articulate four shared values our congregation is striving to make real. To live our values, we must continually reflect on them and evaluate how we are doing with these lofty aspirations. Throughout the year, I work with the Committee on Shared Ministry (COSM) to gather input from all of you and report back to the Board of Trustees on how I think we’re doing. Our value statements are broad and not easy to quantify. Your input – how you think and feel we are doing - is our most important data point. So, we’d love to hear from you.
Our second value statement reads:
We support the spiritual growth and well-being of our congregational community, cultivating gratitude, joy, curiosity, wonder, and an openness to personal and relational transformation as we strive to build a better world.
Does UCE support your spiritual growth and well-being? If so, how? Does being a part of the UCE community help you to cultivate gratitude, joy, curiosity, and wonder? Do you feel more open to personal and relational transformation? Do you even know what that means? If not, we want to know that too!
Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts on how you think we’re doing in terms of living this value statement as a congregation. Here is a link to a short questionnaire so you can share your input. Even just a few words or sentences will be helpful if that’s all you have time for.

Write a letter to Someone Incarcerated this Holiday Season
Prison life, particularly during the holidays, is isolating, acutely lonely, and deeply depressing, especially for folks who have lost touch with family or loved ones. Here are two ways you could make a significant difference in someone's life this holiday season:
Stop by the Holiday Card Writing Table on Ornament Sunday (this Sunday!) to join the UCE Prison Ministry Team and the Anti-Oppression Task Force’s Radical Inclusion and Hospitality Working Group in sending a note to someone.
Become a prison pen pal—sending letters, cards, and e-messages to someone in prison. Studies show that an incarcerated person with connections to the outside world (such as a pen pal), will be 6 times less likely to reoffend within their first year of release. Please contact Rev. Allison Farnum, Director of UU Prison Ministry of Illinois, at uupmi.info@gmail.com to learn more.

Refugee In My Own Home:
A Unitarian Universalist Vigil for Gaza
Sunday, December 3rd, 2023
6:00 PM to 7:15 PM Eastern
Zoom provided upon RSVP
This vigil, open to all, is to honor the spiritual work toward ending the violence. We are calling for a permanent ceasefire and end to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, a release of all hostages/prisoners, humanitarian aid, and an accountability process that is not rooted in revenge. We deeply honor the worth and dignity of all Palestinians and all Israelis. We aim to be present with one another and deepen our attention to the crises in Gaza as Unitarian Universalists. We are mindful of the deep and complex roots in the minds and hearts of Westerners. The intention of this first vigil is to re-root ourselves in our feelings.
Join us as we grieve, rage, learn, and find solace together. The vigil will be held for 45 minutes, with a 30 minute facilitated breakout session for those who wish to connect more intentionally.
RSVP Required for Zoom: druumm.org/events
View our previous vigil at youtube.com/@DRUUMM
Hosted by concerned Unitarian Universalist ministers, religious professionals, lay leaders, the Church of the Larger Fellowship, DRUUMM and more. Vigil officiants include Alice Ashrawi, Rev. Mitra Rahnema, Rev. Annie Gonzalez, Rev. Joseph Santos-Lyons, Rev. Summer Albayati, Devin Dadah, Rev. Ranwa Hammamy, Rev. Sana Saeed, Rev. DL Helfer, Rev. Sarah Skochko, and more.

Their charge is to comfort American soldiers with a taste of home and a sympathetic ear. They do much more than that and return home heroes.
