From The Pastor's Desk:

Dear members at Lord of Life,
You may not know how often I read through our directory - it's a prayer tool that I use, reading through those 25 pages of names. Sometimes I know just what to pray for, but for many of you, I really don't know. I don't know your family tree, how your home is decorated, what you love or what challenges you. Usually, in a pastor's first year, there are lots of fellowship events and time spent visiting while getting up to speed on administration and programs. Covid took that away; and our culture has changed in how much a pastor is welcomed into your home and your life. Add to that, phone technology has changed - most Americans say that it's harder now to make a phone call, maybe because the fear of interrupting someone has become a barrier to calling.
I hear from many members that they hesitate to call me because I may be busy. That's a tough one - because on one hand, I should be busy. We're a large congregation, and there are indeed many things every week that keep me active. However, people are the heart of ministry. Time with people is where deeper relationships form, and that is key. I can't teach engaging Bible studies or preach meaningful sermons if I don't know you, and if I don't understand the realities of life that surround our campus. You, reading this, matter deeply to me and to the congregation - praise God for that! I hope that in the weeks and months to come, you can reach out to me so that we can set a time to meet, for me to catch up on your life and learn how to minister to people in this time and place. (We can meet in person or, if you prefer, virtually.) The best way to reach me is to call the Church office and leave a message with the best time to call you; you can also call or text my cell phone (you won't interrupt me, I won't answer if I'm 'busy'); or reach out through email/Facebook (slowest method but I will reply). You and I can race each other to see who calls the other one first!
I am praying for you - and I hope to connect more with each of you. Let's use this December to fill my January calendar with visits!

Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

"Blue Christmas" Service

Wednesday, December 21st At 7:00 PM

When ‘joy’ is hard to find…
and it doesn’t feel like the ‘most wonderful time of the year’…

Many people assume that this season of red and green means that grief, sorrow, loneliness, anxiety, & depression disappear,
but no sugar-coating takes that pain away. Job loss, divorce, chronic disease, or other challenges cause us to ache. We need God more than ever.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Come and gather in a worship service that seeks the deeper hope and joy that God offers in the midst of hurt or hopelessness. In the darkness of the ‘Longest Night’ of the year, we will light candles, gather in prayer, and ask God to come and be with us.
All are welcome; please invite those in your circle who may need a healing time like this.

December Events

Tuesday December 6th: We will be bringing a Christmas dinner to Bridge Of Peace. The menu is centered around ham and macaroni and cheese. We can use food or monitary donations. We will be collecting mittens, gloves, socks, and winter hats again. We will be making up goody bags again so if you have any leftover Halloween candy that you do not want, we will be happy to take it! We will also including granola bars and fruit bars in the bags. You can leave any donated items for the bags in the church kitchen. Mark them for "BOP."

Friday, December 9th: This is the date for our annual Women's Ministry Christmas gathering. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We will be doing our Christmas ornament exchange, too! Buy an ornament in the $5.00 to $10.00 range, wrap it, and bring it to the gathering.

Saturday, December 10th and Sunday, December 11th: We will be holding a sale. We are looking for people who have a special talent to donate goods we can sell: jams, candy, homemade ornaments, cakes, pies, cookies (bagged in quantity of 6), or anything else you can think of. If you can help with this, please let me know. We are trying to keep it less stressful then making up cookie trays. We will sell them following the church services. The money will go into the Womens's Ministry account so we can be able to help other organizations or churches.

Project LOL:

"Spare A Square" Faith Development Center
Roof Replacement Campaign
Dear Lord of Life members,
Many of you remember when we planned to add the Faith Development Center (FDC) to our church building. It became our education wing and holds 4 classrooms, a kitchen, bathroom with showers, and lots of storage space. Newer members might have attended our FDC renaming ribbon-cutting in May of 2022. Long-time members, do you remember the fund-raising that went on and the construction of the actual building by our own members? The raising of funds and rafters brought us together to do something amazing for our church community. We got to live out our Baptismal verse from Matthew 5:16 - “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Now, we need your help again. The front roof of the FDC that holds the solar panels is in need of repair. The plywood has warped, causing leaks in the building. We have obtained estimates and the whole job will cost a little under $40,000 dollars. While we have saved for such an occasion, we are asking you to
consider contributing to lighten the load of this Lord of Life financial burden.
Please consider donating to “Spare A Square.” A Square of shingles costs $50. You can use your regular church envelopes or just a plain envelope to enclose your check. Please designate the contribution for "Spare A Square." You can place your envelope in the collection plate during the church services or mail it to the church office. Whatever you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. The roof repairs will start as soon as the contractor's schedule allows, so soon you will get to see what our Stewardship campaign told us to expect: Grace in Action!
Thank you for your generosity!

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, December 28th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make over 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese in a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

Wednesdays Away
December 7th

If you are looking for a time of spiritual renewal, the Cross Roads staff will, once again, offer an opportunity throughout the year with their Wednesdays Away program. Our time together includes prayer and conversation, led by a spiritual director and focusing on a different spiritual practice or theme each month. These retreats are open to all people interested in exploring new faith practices. Attend one or attend all—and be sure to invite friends to join you.
We are excited to share that we will return to offering in-person gatherings for the 2022-2023 season. Each retreat will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in person at Cross Roads (check-in will begin at 9:30 AM). The cost is $50 per in-person gathering (includes lunch). Out of love for our community and in response to the current pandemic, we have established the following protocols for the in-person Wednesdays Away sessions: participants must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination as well as negative results from a COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event date. For more information and to register, click on the link below.

The A, B, C's
Of December
In the last month of the year, there are many wonderful things happening at Lord of Life.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
A. Attend - and bring your energy that lifts others up!
Friday, December 2nd, from 7:00-8:00 PM, the lighting of the Tabernacle Christmas tree at the municipal building on Carranza Rd, where Pastor Wendolyn will be offering the invocation and Lord Of Life will host a crafting booth.
Friday, December 9th - Women’s Ministry Christmas gathering, bring an appetizer/dessert and ornament.
Sunday, December 11th - Christmas Caroling - leave Lord Of Life together at 11:00 AM.
Sunday, December 18th - Annual Christmas Pageant during the 10:00 AM service.
Wednesday, Dec 21st at 7:00 PM - Blue Christmas service for those who are grieving or “blue” during this season.
Saturday, Dec 24th - 3 festive services:
3:00 PM for family, 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM traditional service with candlelight.
Sunday, Dec 25th – 10:00 AM Carol sing and Communion service.

B. Bring food for the hungry
Use the shopping cart in the Narthex for donations. We are also still collecting pop top cans and food for the Bridge of Peace food pantry. Powdered milk is always needed. We are the only congregation left supporting the Bridge Of Peace food pantry. Please help!
We are also collecting socks, hats and gloves that will be brought over to Bridge of Peace on Dec 6. Please leave those items in the kitchen marked BOP.
Giving Tree - tags and bring it back by Dec 11-the day we Christmas carol.

C. Contribute to end-of-year giving and the 2023 spending plan.
Please do your best to meet (or exceed) your planned giving in 2022.
If you have not already turned in your pink EOS card for 2023, it is not too late.
We are currently working on the expenses - what we call the spending plan of the church for 2023.
While giving has gone down over the past 4 years, expenses have not; we are anticipating a shortfall against our spending plan (expenses) for 2022 by around $65,000. This will be offset by the covid relief money we were able to acquire, but there ends our cushion. That being said, with all the activities going on in the church, with new members entering our midst, we are looking forward to a great month of giving in December. Help our congregation fulfill its mission to proclaim God’s love to one another and to the world. And hear us at Lord Of Life
as we say “THANK YOU for your continued support!”
2023
Offering Envelopes

From The Editor:

LifeLines Ending Song:
Our ending song is an upbeat version of ELW #251. The hymn is based on The Magnifcat found in Luke 1:46-56. Mary has been told that she will give birth to our Savior. She then speaks these words. This version is sung much faster than it normally would be during a church service. The tune is Kingsfold, which is an old folk tune said to date back to the Middle Ages. It is used as the music in three other ELW hymns: #412 - Come, Join The Dance Of Trinity, #611 - I Hear The Voice Of Jesus Say, and #636 - How Small Our Span Of Life.

"And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.' "
Seasons Wishes:
To all our readers: Have a fulfilling Advent Season, a Blessed and Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! We'll be back on January 1, 2023 with the next edition of LifeLines.
