REJOICE!!!!Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday in our Advent journey of joyful hope. The third candle of the Advent wreath is lit, the pink candle. The pink candle is also referred to as the Shepherd’s candle.

Gaudete Sunday is named for a Latin word that means “rejoice”. We remember that the wait for Jesus, born in a manger is approaching and that Jesus will soon be with us. There are many references to rejoicing in the Mass that we participate in via live streaming or in the safety of the Church of St. Mary. We are getting closer to the wonderful celebration of Christmas and the celebration of God becoming human, one of us. As we pray together this Gaudete Sunday, as we read and or listen to the scriptures of the Mass, we remember that Jesus himself is the source of all our lasting joy. How might we share the “joy of the Lord” the remaining days of the Advent season with family, neighbor, friend and stranger?

This weekend we are invited to participate in the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Some parishioners have members of religious communities in their families. Many of us recall the sacrifice, example, dedication and generosity of sisters, brothers and priests in our religious formation from days gone by.

I had the good fortune of working with religious women, praying with them, being prayed for by them at many of my assignments across the Archdiocese. One of my friends, a retired Adrian Dominican sister shared the following with me from the Motherhouse in Adrian, Michigan. She wrote….

“Retirement is not what I thought it would be – but that is OK. We have so many activities here at Maria and on campus one has to choose and avoid double booking. Here at Maria many events are provided into our rooms via TV. We are very fortunate here as every need is provided pronto. So many things are such due to the many benefactors who are so generous. God bless them (you) all!

Our average medium age is in the 80’s. So much has happened since I entered 66 years ago and shortly thereafter when we had close to 100 girls entering. In the ‘60’s we were about 2600 and now we are under 600. Like all today we are dealing with the many changes that we face. Our ministries have changed as have our living. All are slowly returning to the Motherhouse and walkers are the common mode of getting around. Don’t think any of us expected this. Good thing God is in charge.”

Thanks for your prayers and financial support in today’s second collection for Retired Religious.

I hope that you have heard me asking everyone this Advent to join in sharing with others, parishioners, family members and friends that registration ahead of time is essential to share the joy of Jesus’ birth at the Church of St. Mary. Registering ahead of time, planning ahead of time, deciding ahead of time and registering will assist in scheduling attendees for the Christmas Masses.

All are welcome to worship with us this Advent and Christmas. All are reminded, encouraged and requested to use Signup Genius. Traditionally there are significantly larger crowds at St. Mary’s than we can reasonably handle. In this time of pandemic, with all registering ahead of time, knowing that there are seats available or not will limit disappointment and frustration if one just walks in and anticipates they can enter the church. All are welcome to worship, many will be joining via live streaming as the parish community of the Church of St. Mary’s prayerfully and joyously welcomes the birth of our Lord and our Savior on Christmas.

Please also share that we will be streaming every Mass offered at St. Mary’s on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. You, your family and friends are warmly invited to pray with the parishioners of St. Mary’s by streaming from the comfort of your home or attending from the comfort of the Church of St. Mary. We are asking that you register for Mass through our parish website and Sign-up Genius if you will be joining us at church, attending in person, this Christmas.

Our schedule for the season of Christmas is as follows:

  • Thursday, December 24th - Christmas Eve Masses - 3 PM, 5 PM and 10 PM
  • Friday, December 25th - Christmas Day Masses - 9 AM and 11 AM
  • Saturday, December 26th – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of the Holy Family
  • Sunday, December 27th – 8 AM, 10 AM and 12 Noon Masses – Feast of the Holy Family
  • Thursday, December 31st – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of Mary, Mother of God
  • Friday, January 1, 2021 – 9 AM Mass – Feast of Mary, Mother of God
  • Saturday, January 2nd – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of the Epiphany
  • Sunday, January 3rd - 8 AM, 10 AM and 12 Noon Masses – Feast of the Epiphany

We are only able to welcome the number of people in church allowed by the guidelines of the state and Archdiocese thus the reason we are asking everyone to help get the word out to register on line or by calling the Parish Office. Please plan accordingly as the Masses on Saturday and Sunday may be less crowded in person at St. Mary’s than the crowds at church on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. As Catholics we celebrate not only the octave of Christmas, 8 days, but the season of Christmas with celebrations up to and including the baptism of the Lord, the last feast of the Christmas season on January 10, 2021.

Oplatki wafers are once again available for your Christmas celebrations. You may get the oplatki wafers in the Parish Office or from the sacristy after Mass. A free will donation is accepted for them.

God bless you with a peaceful waiting heart this Advent.

Retirement Fund for Religious
In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul urges us to remain steadfast in helping others: “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up” (Gal 6:9). During these unprecedented times, many are hurting and need our assistance, including elderly religious. As we approach the annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection, I encourage your continued support.

As you may know, senior religious were instrumental in establishing Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies. Often this progress came at great sacrifice, and many older sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little to no pay.

Today, hundreds of religious communities do not have enough retirement savings and struggle to provide for a growing number of elder members. Covid-19 has only increased the challenge to provide adequate care.

Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. If you are unable to give during Mass, please mail your offertory envelope to your parish or donate through your parish’s online giving platform, if available. You can also send your contributions to:

National Religious Retirement Office
3211 Fourth Street NE
Washington DC 20017-1194

Please make your check payable to Retirement Fund for Religious.
In these difficult days, you may feel as though your generosity has been exhausted. I ask just two things. First, please join me in praying for God’s protection for all our elderly religious. Second, please support the Retirement Fund for Religious collection as you are able—and know that women and men religious across the country hold you and your loved ones in grateful prayer.
From the Parish Finance Council
Advent 2020
Dear Parishioners of the Church of St Mary,

The Church of St. Mary Parish Finance Council wants to thank all parishioners for their continued and generous support of the Church of St. Mary. Your financial generosity funds the ministries of the Parish, our Religious Education programs and our Parish School. The Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 will be arriving in your mailboxes in the coming days. An electronic copy of the report is also available on the Church of St. Mary website.

Covid-19 remains the largest challenge for our Parish as we navigate the fall of 2020 and look forward to 2021. This health crisis requires all of us to examine our resources and balance our charitable contributions. Your commitment to the Church of St. Mary enables us to continue to do the critical work of ministering to our Parish, ensuring a safe and enriching environment at our School, and assisting those in need not only at our sharing Parish, but throughout our community.

The financial reality for FY2020 saw a marked decrease in Church donations and continue at a 17% decrease under budget. The demands on all our financial resources are more urgent than ever. We are writing to ask you to consider your level of giving to the Parish. One of the simplest ways to do this is to consider participating in our safe electronic giving system, GiveCentral on the Church of St. Mary website, to ensure your weekly support of the Church. Please turn this letter over for instructions on how to use GiveCentral. With the participation and generosity of all parishioners, we will be able to continue to serve and support the ministries at the Parish.

Know that you can reach out to any member of the Parish Finance Council if you have questions. One of our objectives for the year is to increase the ways we communicate to the parish, in addition to the Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020. May your celebrations with family at Christmas be healthy and joyous for all.

Thank you for your generous and continued support of the ministry and mission of St. Mary’s this Advent and in the New Year.

Respectively submitted.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.

  • Church Entrance:  The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
  • Arrive On Time:  South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
  • Entrance Doors Close:  South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
  • Volunteers:  Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
  • Masks/Face Covering:  Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
  • Hand Sanitizer:  Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
  • Social Distance:  Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
  • 100 Persons Maximum:  A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
  • Church Exit:  The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
  • Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only:  Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
  • Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
  • Restrooms Unavailable:  For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
  • Registration Required:  Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
  • SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.

VOLUNTEERS
We are requesting volunteers to assist and volunteer guidelines will be sent to all volunteers when they SignUp for a Church of St. Mary Volunteer SignUP shift:

Volunteer Tasks:
  • Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
  • Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
  • Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
  • Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
  • Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.
December 13, 2020: Gospel Reflection for The Third Sunday of Advent
This Sunday we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday in Advent. Gaudete is Latin for “rejoice” and is why we light the pink/rose candle. We are getting close to the birth of the Messiah! Our first two readings are very joyous indeed both proclaiming how the spirit is working. In our first reading third Isaiah is lifting up the spirits of those returning to Judah from exile. The land they return to is in ruin but the God of Israel has commanded Isaiah to bring glad tidings to the poor, heal the brokenhearted and proclaim a jubilee year from the Lord. A jubilee year would have meant, releasing people of slavery and cancellation of debt. It is a fresh start for everyone, one they sorely need.

In the gospel we hear how some delegates from the religious elite are trying to figure out who the John the Baptist is and why is he Baptizing people? We know they most likely won’t walk away from the discourse happy because we are told right away that John was sent by God to do God’s will whereas the delegation has been sent from their bosses… not God. When they ask John who he is he quickly tells them who he is not. He is not the Christ. That sounds like an awkward way to answer the question. Some scripture scholars believe the author of the gospel wrote in this manner to purposely set it up so that John the Baptist could deny being the Christ. This is because even after over a hundred years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, there were some pockets of people who believed it was John who was the Messiah and not Jesus. John the Baptist is quick to let the delegation from the religious elite know that not only is he not the Christ, he is not the Prophet Elijah either. John’s purpose is to prepare people for the coming of Jesus who is the Christ! Similar to last week’s gospel John lets the audience know that he comes baptizing people with water for the cleansing of sin. This prepares their hearts and souls to be baptized by the Holy Spirit to receive our own unique God given mission. How can we recognize when someone has been baptized by water? They have changed their heart to turn towards God, the outward expression of this is seen by our actions. It is easy to be kind, compassionate, forgiving and help your friends in need. The mark of someone who has turned towards God is doing all of these actions to those who have hurt us. Advent is a wonderful season to encourage ourselves to look into our own hearts and see where we too can grow closer to God.

MARY: WOMAN OF GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER

Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus.

PRESENTER: CAITLYN TRADER

Ways to Volunteer
Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed

Are you interested in helping seniors in your community? Catholic Charities partners with Meals on Wheels America to provide a noontime meal for those who are homebound or unable to prepare their own food due to physical or mental difficulties. Many of our Meals-on-Wheels clients see only one person per day—our volunteers. Many of them would be unable to live independently without home-delivered meals. Volunteers are needed throughout Lake County, but the need is greatest right now in Fox Lake, Wauconda, and Mundelein. This is a great role for a group or individual who has a few hours once a week or once a month. Substitute and seasonal volunteers are needed as well!

For more information, please visit https://www.ccofchicagovolunteer.com/volunteer-sign-up
or contact Sue Fowler at (847) 782-4126 or sfowler@catholiccharities.net.
The Soup Kitchen at Most Blessed Trinity is still serving those in need, but on a “take out” basis. As we have for the last several months, we will prepare “brown bag suppers” for our guests again on December 18. Our packets contain a well-filled meat and cheese sandwich, bag of chips, granola bar, a piece of fruit, and a drink (water or juice). We will need between 75 and 90 meals, and would welcome contributions of:

  • Loaves of sandwich bread, preferably whole wheat
  • Ham or turkey
  • Sliced cheddar, American, or Swiss cheese
  • Individual bags of chips
  • Granola bars
  • Oranges, apples, tangerines
  • Juice boxes or bottles/cans of water

Any and all contributions are welcome. Since the Parish Center is closed, we would ask that you deliver them to Ellen Tierney. Please contact Ellen if you need any additional information: at ellenkelly@comcast.net or (847.295.4649)

Stewardship
“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”         1 THESSALONIANS 5:16 -18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations.
