TOP 10 Reminders for the New Season of VASS

December 2023

As we gear up for another exciting season, it's essential that we come together and complete some important things beforehand. Below is a TOP 10 checklist to ensure we're all well-prepared for the upcoming activities, and this contributes to a seamless and enjoyable winter.

Thank you for your commitment and dedication to VASS!

#1 SAFE SPORT On-line Training

Ensuring the safest environment for everyone involved, all VASS volunteers and board members are required to complete the 90-minute Safe Sport Training through NCCP, the National Canadian Certification Program. This mandatory training, which is free of charge, aims to remove all maltreatment within our sports programs.

! Once you have completed the training, please login to you profile and update your skills page on your profile. Add your NCCP membership number and confirm you have completed the training. vass.skiportal.org

To sign up for the training on coach.ca, visit here or for full details on how to get setup CLICK HERE.

#2 YOUR TWO REFERENCES

All returning instructors do NOT have to complete this, but please just fill it in so the tab turns green in your profile.

For new instructors this is mandatory and contributes to our safe sport protocols. For all of the details, please VISIT HERE to get all the details.

As of Jan1, we will be following up with anyone that does not have their references in, so we can help get you ready for the season.

#3 CADS COURSES

The CADS Level 1 course has 3 portions:

  1. The CSIA & CASI Methodology overview sessions. If you missed the live session, the recorded session is still mandatory and can be found here --- https://vass.ca/training/ 1st or 2nd video
  2. On-Hill Session -- The remaining 2 dates for snowboarders & skiers are Monday, Dec 18th and Tuesday, Jan 2nd. Email us immediately at info@vass.ca to get placed on one of these dates.
  3. CADS Course comprise of 1 night and 2 full days. The 1st night is an indoor session and then Saturday and Sunday are on-mountain at Grouse. Please bring your board, your skis, your boots, extra clothing, extra snacks and food, and extra energy! For full details about what you have sign-up for and details of the events, check on your SNOWLINE and look under "About Me" and then find MY CALENDAR. Click on the event and all details will appear as well as any support material that are needed.

One of the on-hill sessions must be completed before you attend the CADS course

#4 ZOOM SESSIONS

All CSIA and CASI Overview Zoom sessions were recorded and can be found on our website.

There are also other great videos to watch:

  • A refresher video for returning instructors
  • Full ASD/CI presentation
  • How to Wax and Tune your skis & board
  • American Sign Language (ASL) video to learn another cool way to communicate and connect with your students

Here is a direct link to that page

#5 Program Coordinators

In the coming week, your go-to resource for program-related queries will be your Program Coordinators! They will reach out to you with valuable information, including details about the orientation day scheduled a week before the first student lesson, meeting points at the base of Grouse Mountain, their contact information, guidelines for communicating with students' parents, and comprehensive insights into the 6-week program.

Their emails may come from an address: mailer@skiportal.org ...... so please keep a look out and check your junk mail if you don't receive something in the next week.

Please read your program coordinators email carefully!

#6 Waitlist for CADS Courses

If you do not get into a CADS course this year, do not worry! Since you have snowboarding and skiing experience, you will still have valuable skills to offer students. We love seeing your enthusiasm and dedication to improving your skills, but not to worry, CADS courses are offered every year.

If you don't have you CADS certificate, we will just ensure that you are paired up with a certified instructor and then the 2 of you will go out and help change someone'e life together.

#7 Where to Find: CALENDAR & SCHEDULE

ALL details about your personal schedule can be found in your profile (look at the picture to the left) . You can also view your schedule on a calendar by clicking on the little calendar icon at the bottom of the green arrow (see picture).

Your calendar and schedule are located under the 'OVERVIEW' tab.

You can access your profile here

#8 Where to Find: PROGRAM DETAILS

ALL details about your chosen program can be found in your profile (look at the picture to the left)

OR

On our website, click here

Times, dates, & locations can be found under Program Details

#9 PASSES. ARE. READY.

Lift passes are available now for Grouse Mtn!

These can be picked up at the Guest Services office at the base of Grouse Mountain (located to the left side of Starbucks). We strongly recommend not to ski or board during the XMAS Break from Dec 22-Jan 7, unless you have training scheduled. It is often extremely busy with families, kids, and tourists during this time and you could get stuck in 2 hour line ups to get off the mountain.

Check the below list to make sure you are on it before you go the mountain.... PC's and Board member on the second tab.

Instructor Pass List for Grouse Mountain

IF you are not on this list yet please check if:

  • You indicated on your profile you are volunteering this year (see the picture to the left)

'YES, I plan to teach this year'

'NO, I am not teaching this year'

  • CADS memberships fees are all paid

  • Criminal Record Checks is completed

If you have more question email info@vass.ca and we can take a look with you to figure it out.

#10 Check your AVAILABILITY Tab

This little detail can make it so you dont' accidentally get scheduled for a lesson...

In the image on the left, this person has signed up for Tuesday Night ASD and thus they have clicked the Tues Night button until it goes green. They also have indicated that they can do some drop-in lessons and indicated MAYBE (yellow) available on Wednesday nights. And finally, there is a blackout date calendar if there are dates you know in advance you will not be attending.

If this is at all confusing, please reach out to your program coordinators.
