December Devotional

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone." (Isaiah 9:2)
As Christmas draws near, we hear once again the story of a child born into humble circumstances—a Savior wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. This child, Jesus, brings hope into a world longing for such hope. Jesus is the Savior who brings this hope, and it is a hope that is not rooted in human achievement or fleeting circumstances but in God’s steadfast promises.
You see, this is the thing about hope, it is always tied to God’s faithfulness. God is always the initiator of hope. God is the one who comes to us in love, grace, and mercy. The incarnation of Jesus Christ—the Word made flesh—is the ultimate sign of this love. God steps into the world’s brokenness to bring redemption and reconciliation. God in Jesus is the hope we await at Christmas.
This hope sustains us, strengthens us, and calls us forward, even when the shadows of despair seem long. This hope sustains us even as our world is in chaos, wars happen, and change is the order of the day.
When we are tempted toward despair, we are strengthened in this hope and assured that Christmas hope does not end at the manger. The manger is a beginning, and it points us forward to the cross and the empty tomb, where God’s love and victory over sin and death are fully revealed.
Siblings in Christ, as we journey these Advent days toward Christmas, I invite you to hold fast to the hope we have in Christ. I invite us to trust that the child born in Bethlehem is the One who will carry us through every joy and sorrow, every season of darkness and light.
Hope in the Lord and have a Blessed Advent and a Merry Christmas!

Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Sunday will be January 26, 2025.
This year's theme is Resilient Community. From the Reconciling Works website: This year’s theme allows us to celebrate how far we all have come in difficult times while also reminding us we need to keep moving toward the goal of true inclusion. It focuses our attention on how community bonds and relationships sustain the individual members of the community, building resilience in institutions and individuals. When we work together for justice, communities are stronger; when we work together, people are stronger.
