Engaging members with LinkedIn
WSAE member Ingrid Danler to lead live peer-to-peer discussion

Join us for coffee and bagels while WSAE member, Ingrid Danler of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), shares her experience using LinkedIn for member engagement. The program starts at 8:30 am, Thursday, Jan. 23 at the headquarters of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in Madison.

Discussion groups, subgroups, committee engagement and marketing are some of the ways ASFPM has been experimenting with using the popular social media tool to boost engagement and, ultimately, member satisfaction. There'll be time for questions and to share ideas for using social media for enhanced engagement - what's worked for you, what may not have worked so well, what you plan to try in the future.

Making Technology Work for You
Speaker was one of Inc. Magazine's "30 Under 30: World's Coolest Entrepreneurs"

Santiago Jaramillo, CEO and a founder of Bluebridge Digital, a mobile-apps-as-a-service company, will help you learn what you need to know to connect and engage using today's technology tools.

Join us for Connect and Engage: Making Technology Work for You, Feb. 7 at The Madison Club in Madison.

During the first part of the educational program we'll focus on what you need to know to help you, the association executive, thrive in a busier world. After lunch, we'll shift gears as we discuss how to use mobile for member engagement.

We've also invited our technology-based industry partners to showcase their products/services throughout the program, and during lunch and networking breaks.

As a bonus for registrants, we'll be giving away a limited number of complimentary private consulting sessions with Jaramillo and Bluebridge Digital co-founder Adam Weber. These will take place after the formal program concludes. Instructions for entering are located on the event page.

Power of A
American Associations Day set for 2014

On March 25-26, 2014 American Associations Day will take place in Washington, DC. Association executives from around the country will spend two days advocating for the issues that impact the entire community, including nonprofit status, tax reform, health care, government travel to meetings, and more.

In a letter promoting American Associations Day, Matthew R. D'Uva, FASAE, CAE, President & CEO of SOCAP International, wrote, "With so many issues facing our community, it is critical that we share with Congress our Power of A message of the importance of associations to society and the economy."

There is no cost to attend the event. Additionally, a scholarship is available for attendees from outside the DC-metro area. If you are interested in participating, please contact Mary Kate Cunningham at mcunningham@asaecenter.org or 202-626-2787, or visit the fly-in website at www.thepowerofa.org/hillvisit/.

Mobile trends for associations
Take the survey, read the whitepaper

Are you thinking about mobile as part of your 2014 technology strategy? Often, mobile is the first way new prospective members engage with your organization and is a great opportunity to serve your members better with tools and services to meet each member's needs. Your association can leverage mobile technology for advocacy, education, member communications and engagement activities.

WSAE member Results at Hand, has developed the whitepaper, Strategic Mobile Trends for Associations in 2014 and Beyond, highlighting some available tools and trends associations will find worth considering. Mobile trends worth further investigation include:
  • Mobile apps
  • Responsive design
  • Bring your own device (BYOD)
  • Cloud storage and the personal cloud
  • Mobile proximity technology (NFC & BLE)
  • Mobile payment systems
  • Mobile video
  • Mobile advertising
  • Mobile security
  • Event apps as a service
Results at Hand wants to learn more about your use of mobile communication, now and going forward. Go to www.resultsathand.com/mobile2014, share your plans and download the whitepaper.

AH&LA offers gratuity guide

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) has released a guide covering gratuity rates for a broad array of service areas, including parking attendants, doormen, housekeepers, and room service. The guide helps guests determine voluntary monetary ranges for services rendered by hotel staff throughout a guest's stay.

Among the recommendations:
  • Tip concierges from $5-10, depending on how involved the service (booking a restaurant versus hard-to-get tickets) or a lump sum upon departure.
  • Tip housekeepers and housemen $1-5 per night. The tip should be left daily in a marked envelope or with a note.
  • For special requests (like an extra blanket), tip $4 for one item, $1 for more. Tipping is not required for someone fixing something broken or bringing something missing.
Download a copy of the AH&LA Gratuity Guide at www.ahla.com.
