Kesher Marin Newsletter--December 2016

In Hebrew, Hanukkah is also called Chag Urim, Festival of Lights. The song "We Come to Chase the Darkness Away" (Banu Choshech Le' garesh) is a Hanukkah staple in Israel that illuminates the power of light over darkness. This year it has an added significance for many of us.
"We come to chase the darkness away. In our hands are light and fire. Each individual light is small. But together the light is mighty. Flee, darkness and night. Flee before the light."

May Hanukkah remind us to celebrate the light in our world.

Hanukkah   or Chanukah, no matter how you spell it, is a fun and joyful time for children and adults alike! It is a meaningful holiday that celebrates light, miracles, religious freedom, and standing up for one's beliefs. The first candle is lit on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. This year it begins after sunset on Saturday December 24th  and ends at nightfall of Sunday, January 1,  2017.  So check out the Kesher newsletter for eight days of celebrations, family activities, places to find latkes and sufganiyot (donuts) and other special holiday treats, concerts, and more.

You are invited to download the Jewish LearningWorks'  Hanukkah @Home Parent Guide  featuring  Hanukkah rituals, recipes, songs, stories, activities, media & book recommendations, and so much more.

If there are opportunities you're looking for and not finding, please feel free to  contact me .  I can connect you with existing options in the Jewish community and explore creating new ones.  As always, check out our  Kesher Facebook group  for the most up-to-date postings.

Happy Hanukkah!

Deb o rah - K esher Marin Community Concierge
On behalf of the Marin Jewish community, Kesher provides holiday gift bags filled with items to help families connect to and deepen their Jewish celebrations.

Sign up now  to receive a free gift bag for Hanukkah. They will bring extra joy to your family's holiday celebration with  a menorah, candles, crafts activities, treats, recipes, a volunteer kit so you can give back to the community, the Jewish LearningWorks' Hanukkah @Home "How To" Parent Guide and more.

Quantities are limited so don't delay; click here to receive your gift. Priority goes to families with children age 0-18 who have not rec eived a gift bag in the past.
Want a special gift, just for helpers? We are looking for volunteers to assemble bags on Sunday, December 18 from 11:45am - 1:45pm at the JCC. This is a fun activity for both parents and kids. We're also looking for ambassadors to identify families who are not yet connected to Kesher and deliver gift bags to them at your school or in your neighborhood. Volunteering to  make latkes or read a story to your child's class is a great way to find out which families celebrate Hanukkah . To help with bag assembly on December 18 and/or become a Kesher ambassador, please email me .  Your special gift is waiting for you!
