I remember several years ago, when a departing staff member was leaving for another opportunity, I asked our HR representative, “Why is it that it’s always the good people who leave?” His reply: “Because they can!” And so it is with the departure of our good friend, Guillermina Gonzalez, executive director of the Delaware Arts Alliance. At the end of this year, we lose a valuable leader in our ongoing, and never-ending, crusade to promote the power of the arts in our lives.
During Guillermina’s eight years steering the Delaware Arts Alliance from a fledgling to a stalwart organization, the DAA has become the recognized leader in the arts community, championing the work of the creative sector as a force for economic development, enhanced quality of life, and the comprehensive education of our youth.
From Legislative Hall to corporate corridors, Guillermina has been present every step of the way, ensuring that the Alliance is equipped with the latest data and stories of how the arts transform lives, shape student learning, and contribute to community revitalization. Building a membership of more than 40 organizations and 700 individuals, the Delaware Arts Alliance owes its current stature to Guillermina’s herculean efforts.
We at the Division of the Arts cherish the spirit of camaraderie and partnership with the Alliance that has evolved during Guillermina’s tenure. The relationship between the two has been a unique one: a congenial and professional relationship that many states envy. For that, we are truly grateful.
We shall miss Guillermina’s effervescent and contagious spirit. She is a tough act to follow, but we know that Jessica Ball is up to the challenge. She has been Guillermina’s right hand for some time now, and we know the transition will be a smooth one. We look forward to working with Jessica and her team.
Finally, we wish Guillermina all the best in her new venture(s), confident that her entrepreneurial spirit will serve her well. May the road rise to meet you, Guillermina!
