EDItion December, 2017

A Message from the President

Hello to all of our clients, partners, and associates -

Well, winter has arrived - we had an exciting snow storm in Atlanta this month and got over 6" of snow at our office which broke all recent records. It was great fun, and sure got everyone in the holiday spirit. Of course, those in our Denver office are hoping they get enough snow to allow for a bit of skiing over the break (it's been pretty bleak this past month). Please be aware that our offices will be open over the holidays, but many employees will be taking some much-needed personal time off.

With the crazy fires, still in the news out west in California, we wanted to let those effected by the devastation know that our thoughts and prayers go out to them and offer a few organizations that you can donate to if you want to help.
Recently, I attended the Healthcare Design (HCD) Expo and Conference in Orlando. It was a great event and well attended by many healthcare personnel, as well as industry partners. The keynote presentation, by Dr. Nicholas J. Webb, titled "Disruptions in Healthcare Design - The Good News" included various mentions on how technology is impacting the healthcare industry for the better. It was an exciting and revealing presentation and made me realize what a great time it is to provide our services to the healthcare industry.

In this EDItion, you will find an article by Andy Parsons titled, "Technology Systems: 10 Things You Can Do to Ensure Your Healthcare Construction Project Goes Smoothly." I'm sure you will enjoy these details from one of our seasoned Project Managers.

Finally, I wanted to congratulate Blake Harrison and Shirley Wren who are celebrating their 10th anniversary with EDI this month.  Thanks for all you hard work and being part of the EDI team!

I hope you all have a great Holiday Season and enjoy this EDItion.

Technology Systems: 10 Things You Can Do to Ensure Your Healthcare Construction Project Goes Smoothly
By: Andy Parsons

By you, I mean the owners, owner's reps, general contractors, sub-contractors or anyone else who is responsible for building or managing the construction of a healthcare facility. EDI provides various design and technology program management services, and we see the same mistakes dealing with technology systems made on a lot of projects. Taking the following items into consideration can help your project go more smoothly and save you a lot of headaches and money.
  1.  Managers: Add the Owner's IT staff labor time to the budget as a line-item that must be "bought out". Too often IT resources are looked at like free labor therefore they aren't accounted for in the budget. On most projects, GCs and Owner's Reps base their completion percentages on how much a subcontractor has billed to date. If a contractor, such as a drywaller, is only billed out to 50% when they should be at 90% everyone can see there is an issue. If IT's cost is not in the budget, no one will see that they have 90% of their hours to complete in the last 2 months of the project. This will send up a red flag that IT's activities need to be scheduled and prioritized. Get an estimate of hours from the Owner's IT staff, equate them to a cost and keep track of those costs to tell how much work there is to do.

Do you have questions about how EDI can help your construction project go more smoothly?

Project Updates & Client Awards

We are honored to be working with several new and repeat clients on the following exciting projects!

Capital Health:
EDI is grateful to be working with Capital Health again. We were recently hired to help out on Capital Health's new Bordentown Ambulatory Care Facility near Trenton, NJ. This new facility will be 3-stories and 78,000 SF. The program will include primary care, diagnostics center, universal exam rooms/flex space, and an ambulatory care center. EDI has been hired to plan and design all of the technology systems within this new facility: voice/video/data cabling, nurse-call system, security system, and audio video systems.

Denver Federal Center:
The Denver Federal Center, located in Lakewood, Colorado, is home to over 6,000 Federal government employees. The campus includes 90 buildings and over 4 million square feet of office, warehouse, lab and special use space. The telecommunications network is run through a series of communication manholes which route fiber optic cabling throughout the campus. However, there is no accurate documentation of any previous infrastructure work, which has become a problem for federal agencies looking to install new systems. To help solve this problem, the General Services Agency (GSA) hired EDI to complete a total communications network infrastructure assessment. EDI will complete on-site assessments of each of the communications manholes on campus, and provide the GSA with "as-built" drawings mapping out the current communication infrastructure at the Denver Federal Center.

Duke Health:
EDI has been working with Duke University Medical Center over the past year on their new 350,000 SF Bed Tower Addition. We were hired to perform Technology Program Management Services for the initial programming and schematic design phases. Last month we were awarded the subsequent DD, CD, and CA phases of the project. We look forward to working with Duke over the next 3-4 years to help with the success of this project.

Sheppard Air Force Base:
EDI has been selected to provide low voltage design services for the new medical and dental clinic at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.   The project is a design-build project through the US Corps of Engineers with JE Dunn Construction as Prime contractor and Hoefer Wysocki as the lead architect. The 180,000 SF facility will open in 2020.

What does EDI do? Well...let us tell you. We would love to host a lunch-n-learn for your organization. Internal Training:
Not only do we offer training, but we stay abreast of the latest technology to bring our clients and projects the best designs based on potential vendors, their products and services.

Here is a listing of the training or presentations that we have received this fall:
cabling, racks and new industry standards, video solutions for security, RF technology for security solutions, PA system, mass notification, sound masking, new fiber and twisted pair cables that meet the new European standards, PDU and rack improvements....to name a few.
We want to thank the vendors that took their time to meet with us and tell us more about their services and products.

Are you interested in presenting your latest and greatest technology systems and products to our team members? Please contact Shirley Wren to schedule a lunch-n-learn for our staff.

Healthcare Design Expo & Conference  - EDI attended the HCD Conference in Orlando, November 12-14. Healthcare Design Expo & Conference is devoted to how the design of responsibly built environments directly impacts the safety, operation, clinical outcomes, and financial success of healthcare facilities now and into the future. It was very interesting to see the design concepts displayed by several architects at the tradeshow and how their new concepts are changing and improving healthcare. This was also a great conference to see and meet with all of our architect clients and friends.

  • Paul Remke (13 years)
  • Shirley Wren (10 years)
  • Barbara Gray (2 years)

Denver Christmas Party
The EDI Denver office decided to celebrate Christmas a little differently this season.  After another great year of working with our amazing clients, it was time for the team to spend some time together and reflect on the year. And what better way to spend time together doing something fun than by flying at iFly Denver! The office (and their significant others) flew in the simulated skydiving "Wind Tunnel" at speeds of over 120 MPH - while learning the basics of human flight. After getting their adrenaline fix for the night, the team meandered over to the local Hibachi restaurant for dinner with a show. Make sure to visit our Facebook page to check out the  pictures . 2017 was a great year for EDI, and 2018 is gearing up to be even better. From all of us in the Denver office, "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"

Denver Office Renovation
EDI's Denver team has moved into a new office at 8221 E. Hampden Ave, Suite 212, Denver, CO 80231. The space renovation is complete and we are excited to have a new location to call home. We are planning an open house soon to invite friends, colleagues, and family to celebrate our new space. We will provide more information soon, but for now, please check out the pictures of our new office.
