DECEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER

Happy Holidays from Leave A Legacy

As you make your 2018 fundraising plans, do not forget to incorporate the valuable resources available to you via your Leave A Legacy membership.

We hope you are enjoying the quarterly newsletter, the practical monthly planned giving task lists, the free trainings, as well as making use of your Partner Booklets and the Leave More Than Footprints door mats.  Remember it's all about consistency and quality of the contacts we are making with potential donors.

The LAL Marketing Committee is once again seeking additional planned giving questions from the nonprofit members.  It is the intent to feature the answer to at least one of these questions within each newsletter.  Please direct your questions to Kendall Menzer, kendall.menzer@yorkbar.com, and/or Jen Hitz, jhitz@legupfarm.org

Enjoy the merriment of the season and thank you for your partnership with Leave A Legacy!

2018 Membership News

The applications for 2018 partner dues will be going out soon. New this year is a discount for belonging to both Leave A Legacy York County and York County Estate Planning Council. The Estate Planning Council has recently become a program of the York County Bar Foundation and this incentive is available to members of both. Look for details on the applications for both organizations.
Philanthropy's Missing Trillions
Article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review

In the next 20 years, an estimated $30 trillion will be inherited in the United States as the large and prosperous Baby Boomer generation passes its wealth on to the next generation. This is the largest wealth transfer in human history, and may be the single greatest opportunity for philanthropy in the modern era.
For the uninitiated, the math around planned giving (a broad term encompassing giving through estate and end-of-life planning, most commonly through bequests) can be staggering. Bequests from middle-class donors frequently exceed $100,000, and some colleges report that their typical bequest is 2,500 times their average annual gift. US nonprofits received more than $30 billion in bequests in 2016 according to Giving USA .

Bequests are already more than $30 million annually. (Image courtesy of Giving USA)

These large numbers mask a tremendous missed opportunity: For donors and nonprofits alike, planned giving remains a poorly understood and infrequently utilized method of donation. More than 90 percent of American adults make a charitable donation every year, but fewer than 6 percent include a charitable bequest in their will or estate plan. Read entire article.

Volunteers Needed - Boards/Upcoming Events

1. York County Literacy Council:   Volunteers tutors needed for adultsMany adult students are earnestly seeking to improve their literacy skills. The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) has students (both English as a Second Language and native born adults) who are hoping for a volunteer tutor to work with them as they study.  Tutors may help their student to study for their High School Equivalency test or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children.   Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help someone to accomplish their literacy goals.  You will meet with your student once per week for 2 hours, in a public location.   A 15 hour, free training is provided.  Please contact Rita Hewitt @ York County Literacy Council, 800 E. King St., York, Pa.  17403.  Email at cr.mgr@yorkliteracy.org  Phone (717) 845-8719

2. York Habitat for Humanity:    York Habitat for Humanity builds year-round.  Plenty of volunteer spots are available each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  Learn  how you can help build safe, decent, affordable homes at www.yorkhabitat.org.

3.  Cultural Alliance of York County:  Though the holidays may be over, January is the time to CELEBRATE! The Cultural Alliance of York County will once again host our "CelebrateARTS" week of free cultural events January 14-20, 2018 in York!

CelebrateARTS! was created by the Cultural Alliance to showcase the amazing artistic talent and cultural heritage in York, and provide a variety of free, fun events to kick off our 2018 annual campaign; "The Arts Connect It All." Storytelling events, silent films, concerts, hands-on art & dance classes, and a magical themed family day are all part of this year's celebration.  The Cultural Alliance is looking for volunteers of all ages to help with our events.

For more information and our line-up of CelebrateARTS! free events, visit www.culturalyork.org .  To volunteer for a CelebrateARTS! event, email Kelley Gibson at kelley@culturalyork.org .

4. The Salvation Army: Professional Advisors - Even if you have just one spare hour, we would love for you to share your insights and experience with the students we serve through two different programs:
The Builder's Club (teens group) - They ask great questions - it's an after-school program, Wednesdays at 5pm. Contact the program director, Jeff Beard, 717-848-2364, x224.
Bridging the Gap - 5th and 6th graders from York City schools - a character education and life-skills program. Contact the program director, Mack White, 717-848-2364, x291.
