Milwaukee - February 28
Networking evolution: Building stronger relationships
Our associations may produce the highest quality programs, products and services, but what makes us different from any retail store is the community of colleagues any member can find. What we call networking is the cement that holds together the bricks of our non-dues revenue lines of value. Yet, for all associations tout as being the 'professional home' for their industry, this most often means putting volunteers and members alike in a room with wine and cheese with the instruction to 'meet each other'. Associations can do better.
Together we will explore how to deepen Board Member connections. How to create micro-brain trusts for volunteers, members, and industry stakeholders. How to create personal conversation starters for 5 or 5,000. We will learn about these approaches, we will try them, and we will analyze/evaluate them.
We all want to see a deeper loyalty to our organizations from our volunteers and our members - that starts with setting in place a dynamic of belonging and connection. This session will give you those first steps, providing you with new perspectives on how to create a networking evolution.

Madison - March 1
Membership myth busters
In this session, we will tackle association membership assumptions that may have worked in the past but won't be the drivers of a thriving tomorrow. We will debunk the beliefs and processes that have our organizations running the same way because that's the way they've always run.

Save the date - ASAE American Associations Day
American Associations Day, planed for March 21-22 in 2018, is the only legislative fly-in where association professionals like us can connect with Congressional offices and share our stories on important association issues. This year, our focus will be on the value of association meetings to the economy and society along with association tax issues. This unique opportunity allows you, as an association professional, to create connections with policy-makers that will not only advance the association industry, but your own organization as well.
The event is open to any association executive, staff member, or leadership volunteer that is passionate about association issues and wants to make a difference, as well as meet and network with fellow advocates from across the country. Registration is free, and out-of-town attendees are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $300 to reimburse travel costs if they visit their members of Congress. The education session on March 21 is worth 3.5 CAE credit hours.

Web conferencing tools
Looking for recommendations on a professional web conferencing tool -- primarily to have call in option for up to 30 and screen sharing. We only conduct 1-2 webinars a year and a staff size of 3 users. Have used GoToMeeting, but am looking at other options for 2018.

IT vendors
Our Board has approved an IT budget for us for next year. We are a small association, so we have done all of our IT internally up to now. However, Cyber Security issues, tech support, and hardware concerns have made it clear that we need to have a more professional IT approach. I have a very nice quote for IT from a reputable vendor, but I'd like to do my due diligence and obtain a couple other quotes. Can anyone recommend IT vendors you are currently using, preferably in the Madison area?

Republicans reach tax bill deal
Late last week, the details of the conference report on tax reform were released, setting the bill up for a vote this week in each chamber. After a quick review of the legislative text, ASAE's public policy arm found that the following provisions that ASAE has opposed are NOT in the final bill:
- Taxation of royalty income. This provision was in the original Senate bill but was removed after opposition from ASAE and hundreds of other associations. Royalties are a significant source of non-dues revenue or non-contributed revenue that can be reinvested in education, skills training, standard-setting, research and other activities critical to the mission of a tax-exempt entity. Thanks to our collective outreach, passive income from royalties will not be subject to UBIT.
- Deferred compensation plans. This provision was originally in both the House and Senate bills and would have eliminated 457 plans for associations and other nonprofit employers. It was removed from both bills before passage.
- Intermediate sanctions. This provision was originally in the Senate bill and would have applied intermediate sanction rules to 501(c)(6) groups and eliminated the "presumption of reasonableness" for nonprofit organizations that practice due diligence in setting compensation arrangements. It was removed from the Senate bill before passage.
Thank you to everyone who weighed in on these provisions during this very rushed legislative process. Collectively, ASAE members played a very influential role in this tax overhaul. The bill is not perfect, but we were able to protect the association community from some harmful provisions. Anecdotally, we heard from tax staff in the Senate that they received more calls and emails about the royalty provision than any other provision in the tax bill. That is a testament to the ability of ASAE's members to mount a concerted advocacy effort when threatened.
As expected with any issue as sweeping and complex as tax reform, there are still a few issues we are disappointed to see in the final bill. One is the excise tax on executive compensation over $1 million.
We strongly believe this is an issue of fairness, and if Congress is going to grandfather in existing contractual arrangements for for-profit corporations, then tax-exempt organizations deserve the same treatment. We will continue to make this case with lawmakers. Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady has acknowledged there will likely be a need for a technical corrections bill in January to fix any glitches in the tax bill. We will strongly urge Congress to fix this fairness issue and we will update you on the timing of that effort as soon as we can.
If you have any specific questions about any of the provisions mentioned above, please contact the Public Policy team at
publicpolicy@asaecenter.org.
