2018 FOUNDATION NEWS

Click on the links below or download a print version (PDF) of the Foundation news section from the December 2018 issue of the journal Shamanism .

This has been a seminal year in the life of our work, with the passing of our beloved founder, Michael Harner, in February. Though we personally feel the loss, through the Harners' foresight and the many thousands who carry on Michael's work, the Foundation is in good heart and is thriving and growing -- fostering the current and next generation of shamanic healers and practitioners. Read President Susan Mokelke's statement about the Foundation.

The memorial celebration of the life and work of Michael Harner (1929-2018), FSS founder and originator of core shamanism, was held on April 14 in Novato, California. It was attended by about 250 friends, students, FSS members, colleagues, and family. The event was live streamed around the world. The recording of the remembrance can be viewed online on shamanism.org. Read some of the moving stories of those whose lives Michael's work impacted and leave a comment of your own.

The documentary film The Way of the Shaman: The Work of Michael and Sandra Harner can be streamed free online. View the documentary.

A new two-day workshop Shamanism for Inspired Local and Global Change will be offered in April in the San Francisco Bay Area. This first offering, April 27-28, 2019, is experimental, to see how it works. It is expected that the training will be available more widely in the future. The workshop offers practical methods to gain and apply wisdom from the spirits to resolve persistent problems facing humanity, our precious Earth, and its inhabitants.

Gathering of the Circle 2019. We are excited to announce that the January 2019 gathering of the Council in the San Francisco Bay Area will be a special in-person meeting and will include our extended community of the Circle of the Foundation membership. Join us in a celebration of our shamanic community: Connect with old and new friends; experiential-interactive shamanic offerings; special guest presentations; looking toward a vibrant future, and more. Save the dates: Friday evening January 25 and all day Saturday, January 26. Registration details will be sent to FSS members soon. Not a member? JOIN US -- receive special benefits and support shamanism worldwide.

HEALING WORDS

Starry night and trees

In this season of peace and renewal

Remember stillness
In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen, we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair.
--Howard Thurman

Remember belonging
We are not alone. Spirits walk beside us through the dark and lonely places. Darkness is not the absence of light. It is in the deepest shadows that the spirits' presence and wisdom are most clearly perceived.

Remember hope
Don't think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter. It's quiet, but the roots are down there riotous.
--Rumi

Remember love
Beneath us
The world lies dreaming,
Waiting for us to awaken to a simple truth.
Earth cannot love unless we do.

Have a delightful, peaceful holiday and Solstice and a joyous New Year!
