Holiday Greetings
Thank you for a great 2018
As association professionals, we do important work, and together we have a huge impact. It is invaluable that we are able to learn from and support each other, through relationships developed.

WSAE Past Chairman Mike Theo recognized in a recent message in VantagePoint magazine that "business leagues (i.e. associations), as well as charitable, scientific and educational organizations, were granted favored tax treatment in the original federal income tax statute in 1913, in recognition of the "public" benefits they provide. The case for providing tax exemption was that the forgone revenue from these exemptions will be more than compensated for in expenses the federal government will not have to incur. In other words, associations more or less "earn" their tax-exempt status by meeting the needs of their members, the public, that government would otherwise have to meet... Always keep in mind the greater good of what we do."

With a new WSAE board in place and poised to take on strategic planning, it is a great time to reach out and provide feedback, contribute your thoughts and ideas and, well, otherwise get involved. A sincere thank you to our leaders, volunteers and members who have shaped WSAE into a successful and thriving family of members. These are extraordinary times for us as association professionals! Let's welcome and embrace the New Year, with all the challenges and rewards it will certainly bring.

Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) & Madison Area Sports Commission (MASC) recognized for efforts to grow Wisconsin tourism industry
The Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) and Madison Area Sports Commission (MASC) are being honored for their outstanding efforts to promote the greater Madison area as a tourism destination. The Wisconsin Association of CVBs (WACVB) selected the GMCVB and MASC for two Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazer awards at the 2018 Wisconsin Fall Tourism Conference in Stevens Point, WI.

The GMCVB was recognized in the Outstanding Partnerships category for the Essential Madison Experiences, a collection of brand new, only-in-Madison experiences developed with nine Dane County businesses. The hands-on experiences take visitors and residents behind-the-scenes of favorite attractions and showcase the best that the greater Madison area has to offer.

MASC was honored in the Outstanding Marketing and Communications Initiative or Campaign category for the public art phenomenon, Bucky on Parade. The project, featuring 85 Bucky Badger statues, captured the hearts of tens of thousands of visitors, generated over 11,000 public Instagram posts and netted one million dollars for charity.

"I'm tremendously honored that the WACVB recognized the efforts that our teams and partners put forth on these two groundbreaking programs, which have made Madison an even greater community to visit," said Deb Archer, President and CEO of the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau and Madison Area Sports Commission. "By developing new products and opportunities, we are able to take visitors, and residents, deeper into what makes Madison so very unique."

The Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazer Awards acknowledge tourism organizations for outstanding marketing and partnership initiatives that focus on increasing the visibility of Wisconsin's tourism industry and destination marketing organizations. The awards are open to all Wisconsin tourism-related businesses and organizations. For more information about the Essential Madison Experiences, visit experiencemsn.com. Stay tuned to buckyonparade.com for updates on the statues' new locations and upcoming Bucky on Parade events.

Brady revises year-end tax bill
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) released a revised year-end tax bill this week that still includes repeal of a 21 percent tax on parking and transportation benefits provided by nonprofit organizations. ASAE and its UBIT Coalition have been seeking repeal or delay of this tax for almost a year.
Treasury issues guidance on fringe benefits tax
While congressional leaders worked this week to repeal the fringe benefits tax on nonprofits, the Treasury Department issued interim guidance on Dec. 10 to help soften the tax blow on the sector. Last year's tax law sets a 21 percent tax on so-called fringe benefits - such as free parking or mass transit assistance - that nonprofits provide to employees.
Senate votes to overturn donor disclosure rule
The Senate passed legislation Wednesday to reverse recent Treasury Department guidance that limits donor disclosure requirements for nonprofit organizations. The resolution from Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) was approved by the Senate in a 50-49 vote, with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joining every Democrat in support.
