Door Decorating Contest
We are holding a door decorating contest in our building! Each classroom and the office will be decorating our doors by December 7th. We would like your help to choose a winner! On December 10th & 11th, take a few extra minutes to check out the doors. You can grab a snowflake from the front desk and place the snowflake in the jar for your favorite door. The classroom with the most snowflakes will win! 

Infant Rooms
Just a reminder to everyone that our Infant Rooms (Rooms 1, 2, and 3) are SHOE FREE zones. Please do not enter the rooms with your shoes on. This is especially important during the winter months as we do not want dirt, slush, and salt on the floor where babies are crawling. Thank you for your understanding and helping us keep our babies safe and clean. 

Extra Winter Gear
We are looking for extra winter gear to keep on site for children who may forget to bring theirs one day. In particular we would like to have a variety of snow pants, winter boots, and hats & gloves. If you have any old pairs at home that you would like to donate, we will gladly accept them. 

Prep Freeze Cook Fundraiser 
We will continue our Prep Freeze Cook fundraiser in December. Make your evening easier and have someone else prepare dinner for you! Pick up your order form in the lobby. So far, we have raised $314.94 for new preschool tricycles (79% of our goal). Thank you for your continued support!

Pearson Filming and Photography Opportunity

Pearson is a publishing company that focuses on helping the world learn. They publish many text books and videos used by universities around the world. For many years they have worked with Laura E Berk in connection with her Early Childhood & Adolescent Development text books. Her books often focus on appropriate skill development as well as the connection between environments, heredity, and learning.  We have the great honor to be a part of her next book: Infants, Children, and Adolescents, 9th edition. 

During the month of January, Laura Berk will visit our center with a film crew from Pearson. They will be taking photographs and filming segments of our day and of our children at work to be used for Laura's new book. The focus will primarily be on children under the age of three and the various developmental skills they exhibit in the areas of social-emotional skills, language skills, motor skills, and new born reflexes.

We will soon be handing out talent release forms to all of our families, but you can also view it here. It is completely up to you if you would like your child to participate in this event. Only children that have a signed talent release form will be filmed and photographed. 

As of yet, we do not have an exact date for filming. We will keep you updated as we know more information.

Saturday Night Live

Enjoy a night out on your own! We will watch your kids. Children ages 3+ have the opportunity to watch a movie and use their artistic abilities to create a masterpiece of their choice! Free play activities will be set up for children under the age of 3 years. If you have any questions please ask the KKLC Leadership Team.

Stomach "Flu" vs The "Flu"

Often times there is confusion around the differences between the flu and the stomach flu. The flu is caused by the influenza virus. Influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness that most frequently appears in the winter and early spring. Gastroenteritis or commonly called the stomach flu can be caused by a variety of different viruses and cause gastrointestinal symptoms, vomiting and diarrhea. Prevention is the best medicine. Frequent handwashing is the best defense against spreading viruses.

Loose Parts Donations -   

We, at Katie's Kids, would like to keep utilizing loose parts in our classrooms throughout the year.  Therefore, we are inviting parents and families that are interested to keep the supplies coming!  If you choose to donate you can drop the materials off at the front desk at any time!
Be sure to look through our center for how the loose parts are being used within the curriculum!

Meals to Go

Did you know? In order to make our foot print a little less on this Earth, we use reusable food containers for our Meals to Go! We kindly ask that you rinse your containers and return them to the front desk at your earliest convenience . We will wash and sanitize these containers to be used for our next meals.

Getting Healthier...
At Katie's Kids Learning Center, we are committed to providing the best possible nutrition to you and your family.  We hope you enjoy the following recipe: 
Chickpea & Kale Rigatoni W/Smokey Bread Crumbs

  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. smoked paprika
  • 1/2 c. panko (Japanese-style bread crumbs)
  • 8 oz. fresh chorizo (or hot Italian sausage), casings removed
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1 c. chicken broth
  • chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • large bunches kale (about 1 1/4 lbs. total), stemmed and chopped (about 20 c.)
  • 12 oz. rigatoni
  • 2 oz. Manchego cheese, finely grated, plus more for serving
  1. In large skillet on medium-high, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add smoked paprika and cook, stirring often, 30 seconds. Add panko and pinch salt and cook, stirring, until toasted, about 3 minutes. Transfer crumbs to plate.
  2. Wipe out skillet and heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil on medium-high. Add chorizo; cook, breaking up with spoon, until browned, 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add broth and simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce is reduced by one-third, 4 to 6 minutes.
  4. Add chickpeas and cook until heated through, 2 minutes. Stir in kale and 1/4 teaspoon salt and cook until tender, 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, cook rigatoni as label directs. Reserve 1 cup cooking liquid, then drain pasta and return to pot. Toss with chickpea mixture and Manchego, adding some of reserved cooking liquid if pasta seems dry. Serve sprinkled with bread crumbs and more cheese, if desired.
