December 2018

Dear Tutors,

As we say goodbye to 2018, we want to recognize all of the magnificent work you do as volunteer tutors! You make our mission possible. With every moment you invest, every conversation you start, you pave the way for more adults in our community to learn English and reach their full potential. Truly, Literacy DuPage cannot work without you. On behalf of the staff, and every learner we serve, we sincerely thank you for your generosity this giving season and season throughout the year.

We wish you and your families a very happy holiday season!

Warmly,
All of us at Literacy DuPage
Mentor's Tutor Tip from Trainer Karen Fuist

December is a busy month for everyone. So our lessons need to be fun to keep everyone's minds off of what they need to do!

Here are some worksheets and activities to use as warm up for your lessons this month. They are based on the coming New Year, so we will be talking about the future.

Levels 0-1
  • Talk about things we do on New Year's Eve and Day using the vocabulary and pictures from Worksheet #1 and 2.
  • Make an extra copy, cut out the pictures and play memory.
  • Make a word sort by cutting out the verbs that go with the pictures and matching the verbs to the pictures. Worksheets #1 and 2.

Levels 2-3 (All of the above)
  • Using a Venn Diagram talk and write about how our learners celebrate New Year's Eve/Day in the U.S. Worksheet #3.
  • Discuss and write about what is the same about the celebrations using the middle section of the Venn Diagram. Worksheet #3.
  • Talk, write, and read about the future using, "I am going to ___________." Worksheet #4.

Levels 4-5 (All of the above)

Fun for everyone depending on your learner's interest:
