State of the University Address

Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones presented an upbeat 2018 State of the University Address to a large audience at the Illini Union on November 8. Chancellor Jones stressed that Illinois had dealt thoughtfully and proactively when faced with state budget funding challenges, and that the university now is on a strong pathway to continue its path-breaking research and educational contributions. " We are a university that has taken control and we are a university that has tremendous momentum," he said.

Boys with Social Difficulties Most Susceptible to Early Substance Use

Varying patterns of social, emotional and learning problems are associated with increases in verbal, physical and relational aggression and substance use among adolescent boys, according to a new study led by professor Kevin Tan.

Youth Dating Violence Shaped by Parents' Conflict-Handling Views

A recent study led by professor Rachel Garthe shows that parents who talk to their children about nonviolent ways of resolving conflict may reduce children's likelihood of physically or psychologically abusing their dating partners later.

Helping Children Cope with Natural Disaster

Watch the Weather Channel's interview with professor Tara Powell, who discusses ways parents can help their children cope with the trauma they may experience after a natural disaster.

Social Work and Science in the 21st Century

Grant Will Fund Child Care, Support for Undergraduates with Children

The Child Development Laboratory recently received a new grant that restored funding for the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program. CCAMPIS is a federal initiative that supports campus-based child care services to help Pell-grant eligible students attain and complete postsecondary education.

Alicia Walker, current MSW student and the parent liaison for CCAMPIS, has recruited three student parents for the program so far, which expects to serve 15-20 undergraduate students annually.

CPRD's Illinois Youth Survey Receives Boost in Statewide Exposure

During the recent veto session, the Illinois General Assembly voted to override an earlier veto of Senate Bill 2345. The bill requires IYS participation by an individual high school or middle school to be listed on the ISBE School Report Card, increasing awareness and visibility of the IYS statewide.

Broad-based school-level IYS participation is key to its success. With this information, parents can more easily become aware of their school's participation, request a report, and potentially encourage their school to participate if they don't. Items measured in the IYS include underage substance use, bullying, depression and other health behaviors. The data collected by the IYS can help improve the lives of youth and their families, schools and communities.
