Major Grant Award to Revamp Community Park

Middletown Township is excited to announce a $250,000 grant award from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that will help make significant improvements to the Middletown Community Park. Private donations and money previously budgeted for a new skate park will combine for the Township's $250,000 matching contribution to the project. Earning this grant will allow the Township to add or improve facilities in three main areas of the park.

First, the Township will rebuild the skate park that was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. The new 8,000 square foot structure, designed by 5th Pocket Skateparks, will provide a social outlet for many young people throughout the Township. The original skate park was a popular attraction in the community and for residents of neighboring townships, and replacing it has been a high priority in recent years. Working with the Department of Parks and Recreation, interested residents created a Skate Park Committee that has raised over $72,000 in donations toward rebuilding the facility. These generous donations, the grant, and the Township's contribution will bring back this popular attraction in 2019.

The existing playground will also see significant changes and new features. The Townshipwill install a new interactive activity wall with programmed games and skill challenges (pictured right). This feature will offer a new and exciting active recreation option for visitors of the park. Additionally, a rubberized surface will replace the existing woodchips at the playground, and the Township will add new seating and tables as well.

Lastly, new outdoor senior fitness equipment will be added near the entrance of the park. The equipment is for all fitness and ability levels, and it is designed for a communal and social use. Adults and seniors will be able to take advantage of the new feature and work out with their friends and neighbors.

The projects completed under this grant will work in conjunction with a new walkability project that will improve existing walkways and add new trails and paths. Some of the new walking paths will connect Middletown Community Park directly to Core Creek Park to improve the walkability and connectivity of recreational facilities throughout the community. This project mostly will be funded by a $353,000 grant from the Bucks County Open Space Program.

In total, the park will see nearly $1 million in improvement projects that will be completed in 2019 and 2020. Chairperson Amy Strouse thanked those involved in the application and those who helped raise money for the skate park. "This is a multigenerational project that will benefit the whole community."
