2019 FOUNDATION NEWS

Click on the links below to the FSS News Blog or download a print version (PDF) of the Foundation news section from the December 2019 issue of the journal Shamanism .

We began the year in January with an inspiring in-person gathering of the membership of the Foundation in the San Francisco Bay Area. The theme of this year's meeting was "coming together to help create a vibrant future for our community and the planet." Susan Mokelke, FSS President set the context for the gathering and spoke of the relevance of shamanism today. Sandra Harner reported on progress made with the Shamanic Knowledge Conservatory library. Duane Elgin, social visionary, internationally recognized speaker, and author spoke to the importance of shamanic wisdom in a universe where everything is alive. There was an informative talk by Kevin Turner, FSS Director for Asia, on the Thai Lersi Hermit shamans. Opportunities for small group discussion and experiential sessions with FSS faculty members were offered. The program ended with the Dream Dance, with participants consulting the ancestors about creating a vibrant future.  Visit the FSS News blog for details and to see videos with Duane Elgin, Susan Mokelke, and Sandra Harner.

The FSS Polestar column was launched this year on the FSS blog. FSS Polestar highlights some of the questions we are frequently asked about contemporary shamanic practice. "Polestar" is defined as "something that serves as a guiding principle." It reflects our commitment to helping practitioners stay oriented to authentic shamanic methods and ethics, while maintaining their own independent spirituality, which comes from learning directly from the compassionate spirits.

Core Shamanism Chronicles also was introduced, featuring brief personal shamanic healing accounts and practical applications of shamanism in daily life. "By sharing our inspiring stories with each other, we hope to reveal the power, effectiveness, and beauty of shamanic practice."

A new two-day workshop Shamanism for Inspired Local and Global Change was offered in April in the San Francisco Bay Area, to enthusiastic reviews. It was offered a second time in Germany in September at the request of FSS Europe, who invited Susan Mokelke to teach it in Bavaria for faculty and students. Several FSS faculty in the USA and Canada are in training to teach it in 2020. The workshop offers practical methods to gain and apply wisdom from the spirits to resolve persistent problems facing humanity, our precious Earth, and its inhabitants. Read more.

FSS President Susan Mokelke presented at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) 2019 International Conference July 18 - 21, 2019 in Santa Clara, California. On July 18, Susan facilitated an all day pre-conference workshop "The Shamanic Journey, Pathway to Another Reality," introducing Michael Harner's core shamanism journeying method to an enthusiastic group. HEALING WORDS

You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you. Mother Earth is not just your environment. In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer.
