The
Public Service Award is designed to recognize public service programs, projects or initiatives that NCWBA members have created to serve others. There is a wide range of programs, projects and initiatives that may qualify under the umbrella of a public service program. Members are encouraged to broaden their perspective on what public service means and deepen our commitment as lawyers to our public service obligations. For examples of previous award-winning projects,
The
Outstanding Member Program Award is given to member associations to highlight and recognize innovative and effective programs and projects for their own members. Prior awards recipients and descriptions of the programs previously recognized can be found
here.
The
Women's Law Student Association Award will be presented for the first time in 2020. Member women's law school groups may nominate anything from a unique presentation, service project, panel discussion or other initiative. Be creative: the sky's the limit! We invite you to share this and information about NCWBA's
new membership option for law student groups with a women's law school organization in your network.
A central goal of the NCWBA is to share best practices and program ideas with one another, and our annual awards are one way to do this. We hope you will send us a nomination.
January 24 is also the due date for nominations for the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession's
Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award.

Legal Toolkit for Women's Economic Equality
|
Check out Legal Momentum's Legal Toolkit for Women's Economic Equality and the recently published 2019 Supplement. Although it is intended for women and their advocates in New York, it may be of interest to others who assist immigrant women, victims of domestic and sexual violence, and women in industries such as domestic work, farm work, and hospitality work. |
NCWBA Board Spotlight
Nicolette Zachary, President-Elect
|
|
I have served on the Board of Directors of the NCWBA for several years, including fulfilling roles as Secretary, Treasurer, and VP of Finance before becoming President-Elect in August 2019. I am also a long-standing member of the State Board of Directors for the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM). As President-Elect of the NCWBA, I am looking forward to working with the Board and assisting our current President, Jeanne Marie Clavere, in steering this organization toward the future and "Owning the Change Reaction."
I am a partner at Ward, Anderson, Porritt, Bryant, Lord & Zachary in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where I practice personal injury/insurance defense litigation. Our firm handles insurance defense litigation and insurance coverage matters throughout the states of Michigan and Ohio. My practice is concentrated in in auto liability (first and third party no-fault), premises liability, general civil liability, insurance coverage litigation, medical malpractice, other areas personal injury and property damage litigation, and appellate practice. I'm a lifelong Michigan resident and attended undergrad (Business Administration) and law school at Wayne State University in Detroit. When I am not working or engaged in my responsibilities for the NCWBA and the WLAM, I enjoy photography, photo-editing, and attending painting classes as well as spending time with family and friends.
I've been involved with women's bar organizations since before I graduated from law school because I believe women should support women, and although women have made great strides in the legal profession and in society, there is still work to be done. My involvement in women's bar organizations has provided me with valuable professional and personal connections, and I feel privileged to continue my service and to give back to these organizations now and in the future.

Report on State Supreme Court Diversity
|
The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law has analyzed 60 years of data regarding who is serving on state courts of last resort. Some of the statistics: 40% of the nation's population are people of color, yet only 15% of state supreme court justices are Black, Asian, Latinx or Native American. At present, 24 states have an all-white supreme court bench. Women represent 36% of supreme court seats. Currently 17 states have just one female justice.Indeed, 23% of white female justices sit in just five states. Pennsylvania's highest court, where the nation's first Black female state supreme court justice,
Juanita Kidd Stout, served one year (1988-89) before mandatory retirement at age 70, is now all white. To download the complete report,

Networking Events Without Alcohol? |
A topic that came up in our November 14 teleconference with Lauren Stiller Rikleen (see below) was the prevalence of alcohol at law firm and bar association events. With today's increased awareness of the need for those in the legal profession to care for their
mental and
physical health, it's time to plan for opportunities for your members to network with one another without having to balance a glass of wine and a plate of hors d'oeuvres. Need some ideas?
The
Moms in the Bar Discussion Group of the
Association for Women Lawyers (Wisconsin) will be discussing summer camps and summer entertainment and childcare ideas. (No, it is not at all too early to be doing that!)
Dallas Women Lawyers Association has arranged for
two separate lunchtime dates and locations when members can meet to donate and wrap gifts of diapers, toys, and books for children being served by a local nonprofit.
Let us know about your ideas for alcohol-free networking!

The Shield of Silence
|
If you didn't get a chance to join us on November 14 for our teleconference with Lauren Stiller Rikleen, you may now listen to the recording on line. Click here for a link to our teleconference page..
It would be helpful for those of you who have read The Shield of Silence to leave a review.
Finally, Lauren asked that we distribute a link to a survey that is part of her research for her next book: Advice Survey.
