Board of Education Approves Facility Planning Guide and Process
On Monday, November 18, 2019, the District approved a Facility Planning Guide and Process to develop a facility master plan through which plans and designs for significant facility renovation or replacement will be developed.
“This will be a collaborative process with community, administration, and board input leading to schools that inspire and shape the education our children and communities deserve,’” said Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond.

West Allis Central High School Hosts Career and College Fair
On November 13, 2019, West Allis Central hosted their annual Career and College Fair. The Career and College Fair gave all West Allis Central students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of careers and hear from nearby colleges and universities.
“The goal of the Career and College Fair is to highlight a variety of opportunities that await our students after graduation. Each year we try to bring in new and exciting careers as well as underrepresented populations in particular careers,” said School Counselor, Kailey Sexton.

Magellan Promotions Donates to District’s Community Closets
West Allis company Magellan Promotions donated twelve boxes of new clothing to Community Closets in our District.
Content Writer/Marketing Strategist for Magellan Promotions, Lauren Schudson explains, “We like to give back to our community in ways that matter most. We want students to have what they need so they can focus on learning each day.”
“We receive many donations of used clothing but to get new items for our kids is just so special,” stated Meg Holzhauer, Educational Assistant and Closet organizer at Dottke High School.

Nathan Hale High School’s Peers with Purpose Focus on Dangers of Vaping
This year, due to the dramatic rise of vaping especially among high school students, Nathan Hale’s Peers with Purpose student organization, dedicated Red Ribbon Week to educating students about the health risks and legal consequences of vaping. Posters were hung around the school and all grade levels watched a video and had a lesson on the dangers of vaping.
“We are very proud of this group of dedicated students. Congratulations to all the members of this student organization for successfully delivering this important message about vaping to the entire student body,” said counselor Nikki Levine.

Music Makes the Season Bright!
Special thanks to all of our orchestra, band, and choir members for presenting holiday concerts. We appreciate our music teachers for their hard work.

- Shining Strings performed at the Kids to Kids even at Village of Manor Park.
- Lane and Frank Lloyd Wright Pops Strings, Wildcat Voices, and Shining Strings performed at Barnes & Noble for a PTA fundraiser.
- Horace Mann, Frank Lloyd Wright and Nathan Hale choir students performed for the West Allis Tree-Lighting ceremony.
- Nathan Hale and Central High school bands marched in the West Allis Christmas Parade.

West Allis Central High School Lights Up with a New Sign!
When the Knights of Columbus in West Allis closed its doors permanently in May 2019, member Jerry Falk saw a unique opportunity. “Jerry is a real friend to us at West Allis Central High School. He is a member of the Knights and the West Allis Rotary. He approached us to have the sign moved from the 92nd street location to our school,” explained Social Studies teacher Dave Owens.
In preparation, Innovation Coach, Angela Gerloski, helped to design the new sign. Dean of Students, Shon Hernandez, Assistant Principal, Brian Summerfield, and Mayor Dan Devine helped arrange the permits and installation.

Nathan Hale High School Profe Geboy-Helfenstein Leads Her Students Worldwide
In 1983, the Oconomowoc Rotary Club to sponsored a young, earnest adventurer in her quest to spend junior year abroad. It was a life-changing event for Nathan Hale High School’s Spanish “Profe” (aka teacher) Bridget Geboy-Helfenstein.
Students have always been anxious to learn about the world around them. I’ve had the special privilege of helping them experience more than just a language. Beyond reading, writing, listening and speaking, our classes involve the study of another culture and its people.

Village of Manor Park Hosts Annual Kids 2 Kids Event
On December 6, 2019, over 45 fourth grade students from Horace Mann Elementary School were part of the Village of Manor Park “Kids 2 Kids” Toy Drive event. Students were invited to pick out a toy that would be given to a needy child. There was face painting, cookie decorating, crafts, hotdogs, and a bouncy house. One young participant was heard saying, “This is the best field trip ever!”
According to organizer, Virginia Strukel, a retired teacher, “It’s important for youngsters to feel the joy of giving. The students are excited to pick out a toy for someone else. Each of the kids get a scarf from us for helping!”

Nathan Hale High School Men’s Cross Country Team in Selfless Pursuit of Excellence
The Nathan Hale High School Men’s Cross Country Team is built on love and selflessness. Behind that cause, the team qualified for the WIAA State Meet for the second consecutive season (27th time in program history) by finishing 2nd at the sectional following a 1st place tiebreaker with Greendale. According to Coach Daniel Machmueller, the men “raced selfless and fearless” and put four men in the top 12 of the sectional race to help clinch the qualification (top two teams qualify from each of the 10 sectionals).

Shared Journeys Hosts Fifth Annual Canvas Art Paint Night and Cookies with Santa Event
On November 21, 2019, community members, staff, and alumni spent a fun-filled evening with artist Kristen Monday. “We all painted a holiday picture!” said Shared Journeys Coordinator, Lisa Colla, “The fundraiser helps support the Infant Lab at Shared Journeys with supplies, diapers, and wipes.”
The funds also help support a Cookies with Santa Event for alumni and current students. “Santa arrives and everyone who attends receives a cookie and the children all receive a present from Santa,” explains Colla. “We partner with Kohl’s Corporate, Aurora West Allis, local churches and Old National Bank for donations and volunteers. It’s always fun for everyone that comes!”

Resources for Those in Need
Everyone in the West Allis-West Milwaukee school community should be aware of the Food Pantries and Community Closets available to people in need. “We worry that when students are not in school, they may not have access to regular meals,” explains Beth Koehler, Director of Communication and Community Relations. “There are great resources in our area that are available to help. Three of our schools run Community Closets too. We have winter coats, hats, gloves, school supplies and more. We want everyone to have a happy and healthy holiday season!”

Alumni Jessica Everts Wins Concerto Competition at Bradley University
On November 9th, Jessica Everts played Hummel’s Fantasia for viola and orchestra to win a Concerto Competition at Bradley University. As a result of winning the competition she will perform as soloist on March 1, 2020 with the Bradley University Orchestra.
Everts started playing violin in grade school and added viola in middle school. She attended Walker Elementary, Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate, and Nathan Hale High School. “Music has always been part of my life.” says Everts.

School Closing Due to Severe Weather
Over the winter months we all want to be prepared for severe weather conditions. Please know t
he decision to close schools due to snow or extreme cold is a serious and complex one. When we do close schools, we make the decision thoughtfully and as early as possible.
When schools are closed, all after-school activities are also cancelled for the day.
This includes Recreation (e.g., AM, Action 330, Action 300, Rec classes, Rec sports, etc.) and school activities (clubs, practices, and sporting events).

Skyward Student Information System
Skyward is the tool that helps parents view student schedules, attendance, and grade reports while logged in on any personal device! We ask that parents access Skyward to track their child’s progress in school (we only print paper records upon request).
Skyward enables parents to make fee payments and manage lunch money accounts. It also allows for increased communication with teachers. It is very important that parents maintain accurate telephone numbers and email addresses on Skyward.
