Help NATH/Frederick Place celebrate 10 years in the community, by partnering with us during the month of February.
On January 31, 2011 NATH (Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing) opened the doors of Frederick Place. It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years. That first night, we had one resident and have never been empty. We have served 784 unduplicated individuals who have called Frederick Place home, including several newborns and 78-year-old gentleman.
Annually, we hold our Anniversary Benefit on the first Saturday of February. This year we have made the difficult decision to postpone it. We do not know if or when we will be able to have an event that will celebrate these 10 amazing years of service.
We are asking businesses to partner with us and to help us celebrate, as well as raise funds that we would have normally raised at our largest fundraising event. In return, we will promote your local business on our Facebook page, website and in our newsletter.
Perhaps you are:
- A coffee house that will feature a “special drink” and donate $1 or more, for each of these drinks purchased throughout the month.
- A floral shop that will donate $5 for each “special bouquet” of flowers purchased.
- A car dealership that will donate $100 for each new or used car purchased.
- An auto parts/body shop that will donate $10 for each $100 spent at the shop.
- A bank that will donate $10 for every new checking/saving account opened.
- An insurance company that will donate $25 for every new policy opened.
- A bar/restaurant that will donate a percentage of all sales during the month of February, or a certain percentage of a menu specialty item.
- Not listed here? Contact us.
These are just a few examples of how you might be able to partner with NATH - Frederick Place to help us celebrate, while continuing to raise much needed funds. Additionally, we are open to your ideas and suggestions. We only ask that you let us know how you will be partnering with us by January 25th, so that we are better prepared to promote your business.
Thank you for helping us support those experiencing homelessness within our community and celebrate 10 years of the operations of Frederick Place in Rhinelander.

Heaven Gained an Angel
We lost another former resident to alcoholism this month. One of those that we will all remember as she touched all our hearts. I searched in vain for an obituary but have not found one. I know death is not the cheeriest thing to write about during the holiday season, but Carolyn loved Christmas. I feel overwhelmingly compelled to memorialize her during her favorite month. Her death was not something I could mull over for another month, so I selfishly decided it needed to be done now so I could start healing. It is my honor and privilege to write about my friend during her favorite month.
Carolyn Cici was born on November 30, 1964. She traded her legs in for wings on December 17, 2020. Carolyn is survived by countless relatives and friends.
Carolyn wore her heart on her sleeve and loved deeply. Those who had the good fortune to spend time with Carolyn will never forget this vivacious, beautiful, funny woman whose smile could light up a room. Carolyn and her husband owned and operated a very successful restaurant in St. Germain for several years. Later in life Carolyn realized she was a “people person” and became a home health care provider. She loved her clients and they loved her. The main office often received calls from potential clients requesting Carolyn, because they had heard about her and wanted her in their lives. Carolyn was tormented by alcoholism for most of her adult life. She would have long periods of sobriety that allowed the real Carolyn to shine. Unfortunately, those demons always seemed to return, stronger than before and would lead her back in the abyss of alcoholism, shame, guilt, fear, and self-loathing. In the end, the demons won the battle and gained control of her thoughts and fears. As much as the thought of never seeing Carolyn pains those who knew her, there is also relief in knowing she no longer must continue the battle from which she was so very weary. Carolyn has found the peace and serenity she strived so hard to attain. Rest in peace, “Crazy Carolyn.”
I have not seen or spoken to Carolyn since August of 2019, so I, of course, feel guilty for not contacting her. The last time we spoke I told her if she needed to talk, cry, share a happy event or get to a meeting she needed to contact me because I would not chase her or work harder than she would to maintain her sobriety. I gave Carolyn my phone number, yet she would periodically ask other staff members for it. I never heard from her. My brain keeps playing the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” and “if only” game. Logically I know there was nothing I could have done. Carolyn not calling me was a pretty clear sign that she was not ready to quit what was destroying her. Honestly, I knew the day would come that I would be writing about Carolyn’s passing, I just did not think I would be doing it this soon.
When I wrote about Carolyn in 2018, I said I felt like I was grieving someone who was still alive. How I wish I were still feeling that kind of grief. I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I had something so hard to say goodbye to. At least that is what Winnie the Pooh would say.
Goodbye my friend
I know I’ll never see you again
But the time together through all the years
Will take away these tears
I’m ok now
Goodbye my friend

Meal Providers
November & December
|
|
Ever ask how you can help? Become a meal provider for the residents of Frederick Place. There are multiple ways that this can happen.
- You can make the meal at home, or pick up something from a local eatery and deliver it to Frederick Place.
- You can drop off ingredients for a meal and either staff or residents can cook the meal for the evening meal.
- You can bring the ingredients and cook the meal at Frederick Place and then stay and eat dinner with them.
We will call you the week prior to let you know how many residents we currently have at the house and if there are any known allergies. You will normally be cooking for approximately 16 residents and 1 staff member. You can make whatever you would like to make, we ask that you also bring a gallon of milk for dinner as well.
We have changed the way we are having people sign up and will begin to utilize Sign Up Genius for this volunteer endeavor as well. You will find the calendar below, marked with symbols that represent days that need meals. Sign Up Genius with the most updated calendar. If you would like to help out, click on the button below and find a date that will work for you and sign up to bring a meal. It is a way to bless many with one simple act of kindness.
