Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has Released the Draft 2020 NYS Greenway Trails Plan

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (OPRHP) has prepared the draft Statewide Greenway Trails Plan to help shape future development of New York's system of non-motorized, multi-use trails. A website and mapping application were also created to provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on the trail inventory collected during the planning process.

This draft plan follows a survey conducted earlier this year by OPRHP and Parks and Trails New York to shed some light on how New Yorkers use greenways. The survey received over 2,400 responses from New Yorkers across the state.

  • Over 80% of respondents consider closing trail gaps, expanding trails, and increasing greenway trail funding to be important or very important
  • Over 1,800 respondents said that they would use greenway trails more frequently if there were more trails in their area
  • The majority of respondents use greenway trails for exercise

Newly Expanded National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Opened on Veterans Day

The completion of a major $17 million expansion of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor (NPHHH) in Orange County came to fruition this past Veterans Day when the 7,000-square-foot National Purple Heart Hall of Honor re-opened its doors to the public. The new museum features improved visitor access and new and refurbished exhibit space, with an increased emphasis on stories of individual award recipients.

Director of the NPHHH, Anita Pidala, said, "... the increased gallery space also has allowed us to increase not only the number of artifacts we can display, but also has allowed us to represent a wider range of topics through these displays."

Program Director of the NPHHH, Peter Bedrossian, said the changes, "... gives us the opportunity to let visitors experience the entire Purple Heart Journey: from the entry in to service, to the day of the incident, to care and treatment, through the road to recovery..."

New Arboretum Opens at WWW / Zofnass Family Preserve

Westchester Land Trust (WLT) is thrilled to announce the opening of a three-acre arboretum adjacent to WLT's 125-acre Westchester Wilderness Walk / Zofnass Family Preserve in Pound Ridge. The arboretum was donated to WLT by the Preserve’s founding family, Paul Zofnass and Renee Ring, who created the trails, plantings, and signage over the past 10 years.

The arboretum is now open to the public and visitors are welcome to explore its 1/3-mile meandering paths and carefully laid out areas that allow for easy viewing of grasses, wildflowers, trees, and shrubs. The parcel also includes maples, oaks, and lilacs, and a whimsical stone fort at the pinnacle of the arboretum path. Watch this video to learn more. More info.
NYSDEC is Looking for Comments on a Draft Statewide Deer Management Plan

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the release of a draft Deer Management Plan for New York State for public review and comment. The plan builds upon the progress made by DEC's first deer management plan, released in 2011, and will guide DEC's deer management actions to balance natural resource protection, public safety, and recreational and economic interests for the next 10 years. The draft plan is available on DEC's website and public comments will be accepted through December 28, 2020.

The draft plan details a new method for setting deer population objectives that integrates an assessment of deer impacts on forests with public preferences for deer population changes. It emphasizes new and adaptive approaches for harvesting antlerless deer by recommending strategic hunting season and tag changes in rural landscapes where additional harvest is needed and developing new opportunities for community-based deer management in suburban and urban landscapes. Heritage Spotlight: National Purple Heart Hall of Honor

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor (NPHHH) honors the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart, by collecting, preserving and sharing their stories. The award is made to those members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed by enemy action. The NPHHH is located here to commemorate the 1932 ceremony awarding of the Purple Heart to 136 local World War I veterans on these grounds. Exhibits begin with a visual timeline of America’s 20th-21st century conflicts and is complemented by a timeline interactive display providing information on conflicts from the Civil War to today, reflecting the range of conflicts for which the Purple Heart has been available.

Throughout NPHHH's galleries there are Purple Heart Journey Interactive stations which follow featured recipients throughout their Journey: From entering service, to the day of the incident, during care and treatment, on the road to recovery, or to the ultimate sacrifice. Visitors will experience this journey through stories, letters, documents, images, audio and video clips of Purple Heart recipients sharing their stories. In addition, there are Personal Story cases highlighting six extraordinary Purple Heart recipients. The Roll of Honor database is available for visitors to search for Purple Heart recipients. The museum is open and free to the public from Tuesday-Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM and Sunday 1 PM - 5 PM. Project Spotlight: Comprehensive Plan Update for the Town of Durham

The Town of Durham received a Greenway Community Planning Grant to update their 2008 Comprehensive Plan. In recent years, the Town of Durham has experienced an increase in home purchases by individuals and families from New York City and other urban areas. With that there have some shifts in current interests. For example, the Town has seen a resurgence of agriculture by non-generational farmers, which include many young farmers. There are also increasing interests in a motocross track, a shooting range, and in solar farms. Updating the 2008 Comprehensive Plan allows to the Town to review, revise, and update their plan to better meet the needs and interests of their community, while taking into account the economic development and natural, cultural, scenic, and historic preservation goals of the region and State.
