A Message from Our CEO, Janet Van Dyke, DVM, DACVSMR.
Thank goodness we are nearing the end of what has been such a challenging year. Here at CRI, we find ourselves looking forward to 2021, and to new opportunities for innovation and growth. We have all had to learn new ways to work, to teach, to communicate, and to share time with those we love. From these lessons, we will move forward armed with new skills and insights that can make our program even better.
Thanks to the hard work of our faculty and staff, we were able to respond to this pandemic relatively quickly. We created webinars that kept our students and graduates engaged and advancing their skill sets. When it was clear we were going to be dealing COVID-19 for a while, we created hybrid versions of our core modules, with live lectures and discussion groups via Zoom followed by small in-person labs. Based on what we learned, we developed a more streamlined version of the hybrid courses that we will start offering in 2021. Our core modules are sold out through the first quarter of 2021, and we are filling wait lists as we begin organizing our second quarter calendar. Keep your eyes on the CRI website and the monthly e-newsletters for updates.
We are also beginning to add our most popular CE courses to next year’s calendar. I can’t imagine a better time to take Business of Canine Rehabilitation than right now. This course is offered entirely online via pre-recorded lectures and three live Zoom sessions. The instructors include three very successful CRI graduates who share their extensive experience operating rehabilitation referral practices in free standing facilities, large multi-specialty practices, general practices, and mobile. They understand the challenges presented in each setting, teach best practices for creating working relationships with referring veterinarians, and dive into the topics of social media, scheduling, pricing structures, and how to turn your passion into profit. Register Now for Our February Live/Interactive Business Course! |

Registration is open for our February Business of Canine Rehabilitation course! This course will held entirely online with recorded video lectures and three interactive Zoom discussion sessions on February 10, 17, and 24, 2021, at 8 pm EST. Please see our Business course page for a detailed course outline.
In this course, students will learn how to write a business plan that fits their finances, space, staff, and client needs. Interactive panel discussions will present strategies for achieving profitability in a canine rehabilitation practice including design, equipment selection, services/fees, operations, staffing and marketing.

Earn Your Acupuncture Certification in 2021!
We have scheduled our acupuncture modules through May 2021. Our acupuncture modules are held in person in Littleton, Colorado, with small groups and social distancing.
We are limiting class size to 10 students to allow for social distancing and will notify registrants of any changes at least 30 days prior to the start of each module. If you have already started Acupuncture certification, please contact us so we may help you register for the remaining modules and finish your certification as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncture Therapist!

Our Current Techniques in Canine Pain Management course has just been updated and is now available again in the CRI Member Library.

Surface Electromyography of the Vastus Lateralis, Biceps Femoris, and Gluteus Medius in Dogs During Stance, Walking, Trotting, and Selected Therapeutic Exercises.
The Study: This study evaluated the muscle activity patterns with surface emg of the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, and gluteus medius during stance, walking, trotting, and selected therapeutic exercises in clinically sound, healthy dogs.
Static exercises included:
- Elevation of the forelimbs onto a 30 cm tall platform.
- Elevation of the forelimbs onto the same 30 cm platform with the hindlimbs on a 15 cm tall inflatable balance device.
- Standing on a round 91 cm balance board.
Dynamic exercises included:
- Walking at a comfortable speed for three trials of 7–10 strides.
- Trotting at a comfortable speed for three trials of 7–10 strides.
- “Up and over” a 30 cm tall platform.
- Backwards dancing
Level of Evidence: Descriptive Study
Study Limitations: Surface emg has limitations including measuring the sum of muscle activation making measuring specific muscles difficult. Since emg is placed on the skin, the electrodes may move over multiple muscles during a functional activity.
Impact on Clinical Practice: For all muscles, the least activation was at the emg baseline measured in static stance. All muscles showed increased activation with exercises.
Biceps femoris had the least activation on the wobble board, the greatest activation during backwards dancing.
Vastus lateralis has the least activation with the forelimbs on the platform, the greatest activation during up-and-over and backwards dancing.
Gluteus medius had the least activation with the static exercises, the greatest activation during leg weight trot and backwards dancing.

PT Students: You Can Now Register for Rehabilitation Certification Courses Before Completing Your Degree.
Attention, physical therapists and PT students! You can now register for CRI courses during your final year in PT school and start your certification as a canine rehabilitation therapist as soon as you have graduated and are licensed! We will NO LONGER require that you graduate before registering for courses. This will allow you to achieve your dream of working with animals much sooner!
Physical therapy students can register for any courses that licensed physical therapists can take, but you cannot start the courses until you graduate and are licensed. To become certified as a CCRT, you must complete the three required courses plus a 40-hour internship. In addition, you must have completed one year of clinical experience in human physical therapy after receiving your PT license.

Congratulations to Our December Students!
In December, we were happy to have three more groups of students at Colorado Veterinary Specialty Group's new facility in Littleton, Colorado. We held a live lab session for Clinical Skills and two sessions of our Clinical Applications course. All students followed social distancing guidelines and stayed 6 feet apart, except when taking a quick class photo. We are looking forward to seeing more students again soon!

Congratulations to Ruby and Kindle, Our Breezie Demo Dogs of the Month!
Our December Breezie Demo Dog Award Winners are Ruby and Kindle, the companions of Maureen Baumtrog. Ruby and Kindle are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers who have both had storied careers in many canine sporting events. Ruby, who is 12, excelled in Agility (competing at Nationals 5 times), and has titles in hunting, obedience, Rally and lure coursing. Now "retired" from these sports, she works as a Trick Performer, Certified Therapy Dog, and enjoys scent work and barn hunt. Kindle, 8 years old, prefers dock diving, where this year she was the only Toller in the U.S. to qualify for regionals in Elite Distance, Master Air Retrieve and Master Hydro Dash. In addition, Kindle has titles in hunting, scent work, obedience, Rally, and lure coursing. Like her sister, Kindle is a Trick Performer and Certified Therapy Dog, bringing much needed breaks to the US Space Force airmen at Schriever AFB.
We are so fortunate to have these two super stars adding “CRI Dog Professor” to their long list of titles! We look forward to many more excellent classes with them as they help our students to learn new techniques. For many, these two girls give a first opportunity to work with, assess, and "treat" an elite canine athlete.
In recognition of this honor, Ruby and Kindle will receive a gift bag from Jiminy's valued at $50. Congratulations, Ruby and Kindle, and enjoy your yummy Jiminy's treats!

The Breezie Demo Dog of the Month Award is given in memory of Breezie, who was the lead demo dog for our Coral Springs courses for more than 9 years and helped to educate more than 800 veterinary and physical therapy professionals. She was such a great demo dog that our faculty would beg to have her in their small group sessions. Breezie's favorite holiday was Halloween when she was always the best dressed dog in Coral Springs!
