About Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
If you only think health insurance when you think of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, we’re OK with that.
After all, our roots go back to the first health insurance plans in the U.S. These plans were created nearly a century ago for working people—teachers, miners and lumberjacks who just wanted affordable, quality health care.
A lot has changed since then. Health care reform is bringing more change. Our company is changing, too. We became a nonprofit mutual company in 2014. This means that our members now have a stronger voice.
At the same time, there's much that hasn't changed: the need for affordable, quality health care and our role as a leader in helping Michigan residents get that care. We continue to be the largest health insurer in the state.
Our unique vision and mission means we can bring the best of both worlds to our members and their communities:
When you think of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for health insurance, you can know you’re getting much more. We're a company founded on a tradition of affordable, quality health care for everyone, improving the present and investing in the future. Some things never change.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY AWARDED FUNDS THROUGH FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY UNDER NATIONAL EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER PROGRAM.
CHIPPEWA COUNTY
|
CHIPPEWA COUNTY has been chosen to receive $18,535 for Phase 38 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America; The Salvation Army; and United Way Worldwide. With Phase 38 the Local Board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. The Local Board will determine how these funds are to be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies.
The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. You do not need to have been a previous recipient of EFSP funding.
Agencies meeting these qualifications are urged to apply. CHIPPEWA COUNTY has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with CLM Community Action Agency, Diane Peppler Resource Center, Inc., Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, Sault Ste. Marie Housing Commission - Safe Haven, and The Salvation Army Sault Ste. Marie. These agencies were responsible for providing meals and nights of lodging. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Barbara Reed at United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, PO Box 451, Sault Ste Marie, MI 49783, 906-632-3700 ex 1 or [email protected] for an application. NOTE: The application can be mailed or emailed to Barbara Reed and is due December 29, 2020 at noon. No late application will be accepted.

The creativity put into this event by Lindsay Ellis, Mary Jo DuVall and those who donated trees for the auction is highly commendable. To raise over $3,600 is just one more example of the amazing generosity of our community.” Fundraising efforts for the teen foster home are ongoing. Currently, the project is in the midst of a Matching Funds Campaign initiated by board member Linda Bouvet and her husband, Ray. The couple pledged a generous donation of $20,000 in the form of matches from additional community donors. The campaign has achieved 75 percent of the match, but has another $5,000 to go. This was a song found by Jessica Stanaway when she was going through her Grandfather Florentine R. (better known as “Pete”) Vigeant's things.
Pete Vigeant owned Vigeant’s Yellow Front Curio Store on West Portage, most recently the home of the Soo Brewery. The store sold souvenirs, and Pete was a taxidermist, and a skilled trout fisherman and guide when fishing was allowed in the rapids.
SOO WELCOME SONG
(Dedicated to Chamber of Commerce c. 1922)
The Soo, The Soo, dear lady of the Locks
The Soo, The Soo, that’s where our friendship docks
We want you just to make yourselves at home
We’d like to have you share our cordial hospitality
Let’s get together in our work and play
We’ll like each other better day by day
And when it’s time for you to go away
Please don’t forget the Soo.
