2020 has certainly not been what we anticipated, posing both challenges and opportunities. Thank you to all of our members - We are grateful to each of you for your presence, perspective and participation. As association professionals and others in our industry, we do important work, and together we have a huge impact - in many ways that has never been as true as it has been this year. It is invaluable that we are able to both learn from and support each other.
With a new year approaching and a new board of directors in place, it is a great time to reach out to WSAE to provide feedback and contribute your thoughts and ideas. We sincerely appreciate our leaders and volunteers who have helped shape WSAE into a successful and thriving family of members.

Online CAE prep courses begin soon!
WSAE has partnered with the Michigan Society of Association Executives which has launched three revised CAE preparation courses designed to help association professionals earn their association management credentials. The courses – a comprehensive 14-week Full Course, an 8-week Concentrated Course, and a week-long CRAM Course – have been revised to incorporate the changes that were recently made to the CAE Content Outline by the American Society of Association Executives.

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly threw a monkey wrench into associations’ planned in-person meetings and conferences for 2020 – cancelling most of them – but the challenges for 2021 are going to be even greater from a legal and contracting perspective.
This is because as we (hopefully) start to turn the corner on the pandemic – thanks to the arrival of vaccines – it will become harder and harder for associations to successfully execute penalty free, force majeure contract terminations (as so many were able to do in 2020).
Yet many associations remain under great pressure from their members to not hold in-person meetings during much of 2021. In short, the later in 2021 that your association’s conference is, the more difficult it will be to pull off cancellations and postponements with little or no cancellation penalties.

VISIT Milwaukee coordinator named City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission Chair
VISIT Milwaukee Volunteer and Staffing Coordinator Tony Snell has been appointed chair of the City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission. Earlier this year, Snell was appointed by the mayor of Milwaukee to serve a second three-year term and was elected vice chair. Additionally, Snell worked for the Democratic National Convention providing direct support for the convention. Now, Snell assumes the role of chair.
In his first official speaking engagement as chair on Dec. 9, Snell announced a major achievement for the city. Milwaukee received a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Municipality Equality Index for the third straight year. In fact, this perfect score was a key reason why the Democratic National Convention chose Milwaukee as its host city.

Kim DiMaggio receives prestigious recognition
Kim DiMaggio was awarded the 2020 NARI of Madison President’s award. This is an award presented by the NARI of Madison president to the person or people who helped the President the most during their presidency and dedication to the Association: “Thank you, Kim, for being so conscientious, and generous with our chapter. You are smart, dedicated, thorough, and thoughtful. You have helped me again and again to make the hard decisions, and I hope you know how much we value and appreciate you.” The award was presented on November 5, 2020.

COVID package is out; 501(c)(6)s are in
The long-awaited COVID relief package is finally here, and we have critical news to share. Many 501(c)(6) nonprofits are included in the Paycheck Protection Program! Here are new eligibility criteria:
- The organization does not receive more than 15 percent of receipts from lobbying (up from 10 percent);
- The lobbying activities do not comprise more than 15 percent of total activities (up from 10 percent);
- The cost of lobbying activities of the organization did not exceed $1,000,000 during the most recent tax year that ended prior to February 15, 2020; and
- The organization has 300 or fewer employees (up from 150).
There are several other ASAE priorities that were included in the package:
- More resources for EIDL loans;
- Simplified PPP forgiveness;
- Personal protective equipment; and more.
