NSU Alumni and Friends Contribute $119K+ During Giving Tuesday

The NSU community rallied together and EXCEEDED the goal of raising $100,000 during Giving Tuesday. Contributions supported crucial areas including mental health awareness, suicide and violence prevention, COVID-19 student support, and more.

New year, new opportunities to unite, to serve, and to bring hope to our community after trying times.

For the 2021 NSU Global Day of Service, we encourage alumni to submit ideas for both virtual and in-person projects. Whether it is a small act of kindness or large-scale volunteer project, no service is too big or too small.

NSU Socktober Campaign Helps Local Homeless Shelters During the Pandemic

At NSU, giving back and helping others in need is what Sharks do. With the generosity of alumni and friends, homeless shelters in Florida received sock donations from all nine of NSU's campuses in Florida and Puerto Rico.
NSU Halmos Researcher Brings Marine Genomics to the Public

Jose V. Lopez, Ph.D., a research scientist and professor in NSU’s Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, will lead one of four research "hubs" for marine genomics as part of a large-scale international Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics project.

NSU Education Alumna Named Florida's Superintendent of Year for 2021

Dr. Diane Greene, alumna of NSU's Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, has been honored as Florida's Superintendent of the Year for 2021. Greene is the 33rd superintendent and the second African American woman to receive this honor since inception of the awards program in 1988.

NSU MBA Alumnus Receives 2020 Media Innovator Award and Best Healthcare Documentary Honor

NSU alumnus Aaron Abelto and his company, Able 2 Film Entertainment, won the 2020 Media Innovator Award after releasing their documentary “The Power of Movement" in November 2020. The film was acquired by Entertainment Studios in Los Angeles and also won Best Healthcare documentary for 2020.

NSU Alumnus Richard Mansell Ready to Become European Tour Regular

Come next year, expect to see plenty of Richard Mansell on the Golf Channel. Just over three years removed from his playing days at NSU, the former national champion and three-time All-American recently finished the season ranked fourth on the Challenge Tour, and as a result, has been given exemption to compete in 75 percent of the European Tour's events in 2021.

Education Alumnus Appointed Rector of the Universidad de Colima, Mexico

Christian Jorge Torres Ortiz Zermeño, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, was appointed Rector of the Universidad de Colima, Mexico on October 23, 2020. His term will begin on February 1, 2020 and end January 31, 2025.

This year, in accordance with the CARES Act, taxpayers who take the standard deduction will be able to claim a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash donations to qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations, such as NSU, made in the calendar year 2020.
