SHAMROCK LINES
December 2020
The end of the semester is near
From Scotus Central Catholic President, Jeff Ohnoutka

As I write this, we are down to three weeks left in the first semester and the Advent season has arrived. I am grateful for the outstanding faculty we have at Scotus Central Catholic. They have made sure whether a student was in person or on remote learning, they still received a great Catholic education. We are lucky to have such a dedicated staff.

A debt of gratitude is also owed to our cafeteria staff and our office staff. They have dealt with a considerable amount of chaos this fall and handled it with grace and compassion.

It is my hope that our students will continue to experience school in a normal fashion. This fall we were able to complete all our activities and our hope is that will be the same in the winter.
From the staff of Scotus Central Catholic, we wish you and your family all the best this Advent season. May God continue to bless our school with the ability to help everyone associated with it encounter Christ daily.

Sign Up to Join the Speech Team
The Shamrock Speech Team is looking to grow! Although we aren’t quite sure how the competitions will be run during speech season next semester, we’re proceeding as normally as we can. It’s not too late to join the team! See Ms. Mimick or Mrs. Zanardi if interested. There is the potential for a virtual novice competition in December.
Scotus earns a Cornhusker award from the NHSPA
Earlier this month, Scotus Central Catholic won a Cornhusker award in the broadcasting category by the Nebraska High School Press Association. Scotus Central Catholic was one of two high schools in Nebraska to receive this award, the other being Millard West.

The Cornhusker award is the highest ranking award handed out by the NHSPA. To receive a Cornhusker award the broadcast programs must demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic broadcast production. These programs effectively integrate writing, video, and sound to give viewers an excellent product.
Three stories from the 2020 spring video production class were critiqued in four categories: Verbal, Visuals, Audio, and Talent.

The three stories that were selected were Cyberbullying: PSA (produced and edited by senior Matt Dolezal). A Night to Shine: Broadcast News Story (produced and edited by 2020 graduate Brea Lassek). Lastly, the Scotus Central Catholic Musical: Broadcast Feature Story (produced and edited by 2020 graduate Sarah Bichlmeier).

Congratulations to Matt, Brea and Sarah!

(L to R): Taylor Dahl, Marketing & Communications Director, Senior Matt Dolezal, and Video Production Teacher Tyler Swanson. Dolezal's PSA on Cyberbullying helped Scotus earn a Cornhusker Award.
Shop SCRIP!

Scrip is a great and easy way to support our schools without spending extra money. The money raised through Scrip is used to purchase many items to improve and enhance each child’s education. But how does it really work?

Here’s an example…you buy a $100 gift card for HyVee for $100. You spend $100 and get $100 right back…you are out nothing. The school has purchased that card for $97, profiting the school $3 for that 1 card. Each vendor offers back a certain percentage in the gift cards they sell to us…some as much as 20% back. There are thousands of vendors available through the National Vendor, but there are also nearly 70 very popular local and national vendors on hand at all times for you to purchase.

Money raised through Scrip is used to purchase items to improve each child’s education. If you would like to participate in Scrip, you can swing by your parish elementary school or you can make purchases at weekend Masses.

Mark Your Calendars for the 40th annual Gala!

The 40th annual Gala dinner/auction will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021. This is the school’s largest annual fundraiser and all proceeds are used to balance the annual budget and keep tuition expenses low for our school families. Last April, and with the event going totally online, our supporters helped us raise a total of $180,401 for the budget and an additional $26,103 for the campus ministry program.

Because of the changes we had to make for last Gala, our 2020 co-chairs, Dan & Jill Clarey, Mike & Nicole Fleming and Joe & Shelly Steffensmeier have offered to serve a second year as co-chairs along the 2021 co-chairs: Tim & LeAnn Parker, Bobby & Rachel Pensick and Joe & Amy Wemhoff. We are also pleased to announce that the 2021 vice-chairs are: Tim & Caree Cielocha, Cory & Tricia Faust and Matt & Sharee Jedlicka.

If you would like to participate by donating an item for the silent or oral auctions, volunteer to help, or if you wish to receive an invitation to attend please contact our co-chairs, vice-chairs or Janice Rosenquist in the Scotus development office: 402 564 7165 ext. 154 or [email protected].
