Happy Holidays!
As we come to the end of a very long and challenging year in which we’ve seen a global pandemic unlike any we've seen before, we can reflect on how we—as individuals, as businesses, as a country and as a world—banded together to combat the unseen enemy of COVID-19. We believe we triumphed despite the virus and its challenges, holding virtual networking events and celebrations that educated and inspired us, reaching out to those in need across local, national and global borders—and the year culminated with the election of Delaware’s very own native son Joe Biden to US President. We are excited about all of the possibilities next year will bring and it is with gratitude to you—our sponsors, partners, members, and Delaware's elected officials—that we wish you a very safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year!

International Delaware Magazine Released by World Trade Center Focuses on FinTech in the First State
The World Trade Center Delaware has released its fourth edition of International Delaware Magazine which focuses on Delaware's growing FinTech industry.
“Little did we know when we first discussed the theme for this issue just how timely this edition would be,” said World Trade Center Delaware President Carla Stone. “The use of IT and e-commerce exploded during the past eight months as people sought to limit contact with others in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It is clear that financial technology services, or FinTech, is here to stay and will only grow in the future.”
The foundation for FinTech in Delaware was laid in 1981, when then-Gov. Pierre S. du Pont IV signed the Financial Center Development Act, legislation designed to increase employment in the banking and financial services sector by attracting out-of-state institutions to establish subsidiaries in Delaware. Today, Delaware, despite its tiny population, is one of the world's great financial centers. Over 75% of all FinTech investment in the Philadelphia region is found in Delaware and it has the highest concentration of financial services employment in the entire country according to a study by Delaware Prosperity Partnership. The study, "Delaware in a FinTech Future," reported that Delaware ranks No. 1 per capita for the number of FinTech patents issued over the past ten years in the U.S. and No. 5 overall.
Discover Bank, this issue's presenting sponsor, is making a significant contribution to Delaware's FinTech future. In partnership with the University of Delaware and Delaware Technology Park, Discover is building a new 100,000-square-foot center for FinTech innovation on the university's Science Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus that will combine the prowess of academia, government, and industry to support and grow FinTech's future in Delaware. “We thank Discover and all of our partners who have made this issue of International Delaware possible,” Stone said. “Tens of thousands of readers around the world will learn what we already know: FinTech is the future of commerce and Delaware is its home.”

Delaware Prosperity Partnership Renews Its Membership with World Trade Center Delaware
Thank you to Delaware Prosperity Partnership (DPP) for renewing its membership with the World Trade Center Delaware in a year when the First State is sure to shine thanks to the U.S. Presidential election of former Delaware Senator and Vice President Joe Biden.
DPP joined the World Trade Center in the early days of the organization’s development in 2017. “Working with (President) Carla Stone and WTCDE makes so much sense for DPP; partnering with economic development groups throughout our state is integral to our strategy of advancing prosperity for all of Delaware,” said Michele A. Schiavoni, Director of External Relations & Marketing.
“Whether it’s joining forces for a signature trade show event or supporting an international company interested in Delaware, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship,” Schiavoni said. “We think partnering with Carla and WTCDE is important to the state’s overall economic development ecosystem. And, despite the many challenges this year has presented, the good news is DPP is very busy. As the world is now hearing more and more about Delaware, we think 2021 is going to be a year of great potential and the DPP team is looking forward to continuing our partnership with Carla and WTCDE.”
DPP is a nonprofit state economic development agency that leads Delaware’s economic development efforts to attract, grow and retain businesses, build a stronger entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem and to support private employers in identifying, recruiting and developing talent in Delaware. The DPP team’s services include working with prospects to review potential sites, cost-of-living details and funding opportunities, including available tax credits and incentives.

As devotees of the musical Hamilton may remember, the War for Independence ended with the British Army exiting the field at Siege of Yorktown to the tune, “The World Turned Upside Down”. If any song could be an anthem to this year, this would be it. And yet, turning things upside down is often extremely helpful when trying to find something that you think is lost. You may not find what you are looking for, but in the process, uncover something else that is more valuable or helpful.
Such was 2020. At the beginning of the year, we began to receive requests for assistance in resolving supply chain difficulties due to canceled flights and delays at ports in Asia affected by COVID. On February 12, we changed the focus of the keynote for our workshop on trade with China, Hong Kong, and Macau to working with COVID response in the region. About ten days later, we presented a seminar on pandemic planning that was open to the public, without charge. In fact, we made the decision to use all of our State Funding to offer all COVID assistance free of charge to all Delawareans, and continue to do so.
One of the advantages of the World Trade Centers Association is the depth of experience in local markets. As companies and not for profit organizations grappled with securing Personal Protective Equipment, especially masks, we were able to refer them to some of our 322-partner centers in 90 other countries for reliable information about companies, regulations, logistics, and pricing. In addition, the Association invited each individual center to list suppliers of COVID response products and services on a world-wide list. We discovered numerous Delaware companies that were able to provide products and services ranging from non-chlorine disinfectants, COVID testing equipment components and panels used for the construction of field hospitals to emergency response services. Without COVID, we may never have discovered some of these gems.
This year’s edition of International Delaware focuses on FinTech, a sector that simply exploded in 2020 in a way we did not predict a year ago when we first tossed around ideas for the magazine. Delaware, long an innovator in financial services, is now leading the FinTech revolution. We thank Discover Bank and all of our partners who have made this issue of International Delaware possible. Tens of thousands of readers around the world will learn what we already know: FinTech is the future of commerce and Delaware is its home.
Have a happy and healthy, COVID-free holiday season and new year. And please, remember to include some of the organizations we have listed in our COVID resources page to your holiday giving list. This year, more than ever, they need our help.

World Trade Center Delaware President Carla Stone Receives 2020 Top Women in Business Award
World Trade Center Delaware President Carla Stone was honored as one of Delaware’s 2020 “Top Women in Business” at a recent virtual awards ceremony.
Stone was among thirty-four women awarded at the annual event hosted by Today Media, Inc. to recognize the accomplishments of business leaders throughout the state. Delaware Today Magazine, which featured the winners in its December edition, said “nobody was better positioned to help Delawareans navigate international business than Carla Stone,” when she was hired as president of the World Trade Center in the First State.
A former engineer who has worked all over the world on projects ranging from geophysics and mineral economics to wastewater, avian influenza and telemedicine, Stone saw that Delaware businesses “were missing out on tremendous opportunities for building their companies by selling their products globally.” She has led the World Trade Center Delaware, one of a network of 300 World Trade Centers in 90 countries across the globe, in helping these companies connect outside their traditional trading areas. One of her goals is to help fledgling companies strategize beyond their home base.
Stone, named this year as a World Bank Public Sector Liaison, spoke at several big world events including the US Global Leadership Council World Virtual Annual Summit which included world emissaries such as Cindy McCain, and local events like the 2020 Delaware Entrepreneurial Summit while delivering COVID-19 response services to Delaware. She is excited about the World Trade Center’s new location in the New Castle County Corporate Commons and the upcoming 2021 World Trade Center Delaware Gala (more details coming soon.)
