December 2021 Newsletter
Hawaii's weather was featured on the US national news this past weekend because the state was under a blizzard watch! Yes, it does snow here in Hawaii. The warning only applied to Hawaii's tallest peaks, Mauna Kea (13,803 feet) and Mauna Loa (13,679 feet), both on the Big Island of Hawaii. These summits typically see snow every winter, and Haleakala on the island of Maui (10,023 feet) gets snow every few years.

On Monday, there was a lot of flooding on Oahu as part of this storm front. Luckily it wasn't bad here on Kauai. We had some wind and rain, but nothing out of the ordinary. Our high temperature was 75° (24° Celsius), with a low of 60° (15°C).
We never get snow here on Kauai. Therefore, this gecko is not wearing a Santa hat because he is cold -- he's just getting into the Christmas spirit.

The main article in this newsletter features window artwork from our previous California store. David Kolacny's drawings from the cover of my Gecko Tails book inspired our 2005 windows, including this fun one.

I hope you had a festive Chanukah, and have a very merry Christmas and an incredibly wonderful new year!

Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka from Kauai.

Harp Thanks
In last month's newsletter, I encouraged you to "send special thanks to the people who have helped you on your harp journey." Although it was not my intent, I was delighted to receive emails from harp players throughout the world telling me how much my music has meant to them. I'm proud to have been a part of your harp experience, and I appreciate your kind words.
Jaye Emrys
One of my favorite emails came from Jaye Emrys. I asked her if I could quote it in this newsletter. She sent me this photo of a real "harp journey" from the early 1990s when she biked all over the country with her harp.
"The harp is a Truitt Topher. The leopards are painted from a photo of
two in the Minneapolis Zoo when I was there in 1990. The bike is long gone, but I can't conceive of ever letting go the Topher -- she is just wonderful."

Here is her email.
I got my first harp and your "Teach Yourself" white book back in 1982, so you have been synonymous with folk harp right from the beginning. This month's newsletter from you is typical of the backbone of what the folk harp movement has represented to me for all those years -- the role gratitude and love have played in putting right all that had been wrong in my life. So much had been wrong, and little by little, the gratitude and love expressed in both harp music and the fellowship with other harpers brought my heart and life into harmony. I can truly say that in the past 39 years, every single good thing in my life has come either directly or indirectly due to the Celtic harp. Your reminder to thank those around us sums up the debt we owe to the people who brought us to the harp, and those the harp brought us to. I can't thank you enough for being a large part of it. Rest assured my many thank-you messages will be going out in the coming days!  - Jaye
New Music at Harpcenter.com
I'm happy to announce that Rhett Barnwell has a brand new arrangement of Joy to the World, just in time for Christmas!

Rhett's unique harmonies and subtle rhythmic variations give this well-loved carol an introspective, reflective, and meditative nature.

Statue Window
Many of you remember my large harp store located in Glendale, California, from 1992 through 2008. I often hired a local artist to paint fun harp-related images on our windows. She came back in the fall and added Santa hats to her creations. These are some examples of her holiday paintings from 2000 through 2006.

Taking photos of windows is not easy, and reflections of things across the street often show up. I hope these photos will make you smile and brighten your Christmas season.
