Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Blue Springs! I hope this email finds you well this season.
We've had a very busy December with the Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting, the 12th annual Shop With A Cop, a public art dedication and much more. I even found some time to get away to celebrate my birthday and spend precious time with family.
As we look to 2022, I am sure it will be another exciting year in Blue Springs and we have a lot to look forward to...especially the grand opening of our very own Blue Springs Whataburger!
Please continue reading for the most recent City of Blue Springs news and events.

BSPD hosts 12th Annual Shop With a Blue Springs Cop
|
|
The Blue Springs Citizens Police Acadamy Alumni Association and the Blue Springs Police Department hosted the 12th Annual Shop with a Blue Springs Cop event on Saturday December 11.
Twenty-five Blue Springs Police Department and Blue Springs School District Department of Public Safety officers will volunteered their time by spending it with students from
Blue Springs area schools.
The “Shop with a Blue Springs Cop” program is an opportunity for children to socialize with officers in a positive atmosphere and reinforce the fact that police officers are friends in the community. This is the 12th year that the Blue Springs Police Department has offered this program.
Thank you to Farmers Insurance- Cindy Shrout, Kennedy's Custom Jewelers, Blue Springs Walmart, Blue Springs Sonic, and all our wonderful volunteers for making this fantastic event happen. More photos from this year's event can be viewed on the City's Facebook page.

Blue Springs Celebrates Missouri Bicentennial with Mosaic Public Art Project
|
|
On December 9 we celebrated the Missouri Bicentennial through mosaic art with the unveiling of a new public art piece in Vesper Hall.
In recognition of twenty years of public art programming in the City of Blue Springs and to celebrate the Missouri Bicentennial, the City of Blue Springs has partnered with three organizations to create a large mosaic artwork featuring two state symbols, the Missouri Bluebird on a Dogwood Tree branch.
The design for the mosaic artwork was created by Lawrence Randall, retired Blue Springs art teacher and member of the Blue Springs Public Art Commission. Members of the Blue Springs Public Art Commission, Blue Springs Art League, Blue Springs Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lawrence Randall Family assisted in creating the art piece.
This project is supported in part by a Ghost Light Program award from the Missouri Arts Council, in partnership with the Missouri Asscoiation of Community Arts Agencies.
The artwork will permanently hang in the lobby at Vesper Hall for public viewing.

The Blue Springs Snow Removal Team is made up of many of the best operators in the Midwest. Both Public Works and Parks Department employees work together to serve as the City’s first responders for snow emergencies.
The team maintains a 24-hour state of readiness for inclement weather from mid-November to mid-April. Emergency Snow crews work closely with first responders, police, fire and EMS to ensure they can respond to emergency calls. To contact the Snow Removal hotline, call 816-228-0295.

|
- When driving behind a snow plow truck, be sure you stay at least fifty feet back. Do not tailgate or try to pass.
- Never build tunnels or snow forts near the street. The weight of the snow coming off of the snow plows can collapse the tunnels or forts and harm people playing inside.
- Move vehicles off the street whenever possible. Parked cars can obstruct snow removal operations and leave snow packed areas after they are moved.

Last month the City Council approved new standards for residential driveways. Here's What you need to know:
- Permits Needed: You must apply for and be issued a building permit before any new construction or expansion of a driveway begins.
- A plot plan must be submitted and approved to show the location, width, and length of the driveway.
- Driveways must be paved with concrete, asphalt, or brick pavers.
- Driveways shall not exceed 50% coverage within the front yard of or the street-facing side yard in which the driveway is located. Driveways shall not exceed a width of 35’ within the right-of-way and 50% coverage, whichever is less. All widths refer to the total of driveways on the lot, not each individual driveway. Corner lots are allowed up to a maximum of 45’ of driveway width within the right-of-way provided all other requirements are met.
The code applies to any new driveways and expansions only. Driveways that do not meet this code, but were legally permitted in the past, are grandfathered. This code change likely reduces the number of non-conforming driveways in the City.
