As the year comes to an end, the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department takes a look back at the projects and activities that were completed in the last year.

Each year in the winter issue of the Activity Guide the Parks and Recreation Department provides the public with a summary of projects and activities for the calendar year, and reflects upon the extent to which they accomplish the Department’s core mission:

Provide opportunities for physical, cultural, and social well-being; ensure effective development, scheduling, use and maintenance of public facilities, parks, and open space; and deliver services in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner.

WESTBOROUGH PLAYGROUND OFFICIALLY RENAMED ANNE WATERS PLAYGROUND

On Sunday, November 7, City Council and community members gathered to celebrate the life of Anne Waters and the renaming of the 5-12 year old playground at Westborough Park to the Anne Waters Playground. Anne Waters served countless hours of public service as a community volunteer, and had a strong connection to the Westborough neighborhood. She advocated for the recreational needs of the Westborough neighborhood, and served as Chair of the Westborough Swimming Pool Fundraising and Advisory Committee. Although the goal of building a swimming pool adjacent to the Recreation Building did not come to fruition, Mrs. Waters and the Westborough Swimming Pool Fundraising and Advisory Committee, having conducted multiple fundraisers, donated the funds in their account toward renovation of the Westborough Park playground.

Also active in city-wide initiatives, Mrs. Waters served on the Cultural Arts Commission from 1994 – 2002. As a strong African-American woman who was an active volunteer focused on improving the community, Anne Waters was an inspirational role model. She was consistently kind, thoughtful, positive, and collaborative in her interaction with others.

This is the third recreation site to be renamed after trailblazing women who have made an impact on the South San Francisco community. On September 25, 2021 Magnolia Center (601 Grand Ave.) was officially renamed the Roberta Cerri Teglia Center. On Saturday, October 23, 2021 the Westborough Recreation Building was officially renamed the Alice Peña Bulos Center.

San Mateo County wants to hear from you! What are your top needs and priorities for an equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic? The San Mateo County Recovery Initiative started over a year ago and through input from community leaders, cities, and institutions, millions of dollars were allocated to support food access, housing, childcare, digital access, small businesses and more. A year and a half into the pandemic, we continue to experience more severe impacts on our communities of color and low-income communities.
