Chippewa County Credit Union
|
Chippewa County School Employees Credit Union was founded in 1955 by a group of school teachers who thought the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” was intriguing. These few volunteers started the credit union out of a shoe box that served as the cash drawer, as Mrs. Grout would make her rounds throughout the halls of Sault High School.
Over the years, the credit union grew. An office was opened and employees were eventually hired. The name underwent a few changes, of course staff has changed, and we’ve moved to a bigger space, but we’re still the same. We take pride in being able to serve not only teachers and school administrators but our community as well.
Today, we’re proud of our roots. Our members tell great stories of the first days in 1955 when they needed to make a cash withdrawal or get a loan. We’ve been around longer than a half century and we still believe in People Helping People.

Soo Co-op Credit Union was originated by a handful of employees of the North West Leather Company, known as the Ole Tannery, in 1950. When the tannery closed, the employees reorganized their credit union into the Soo Co-op Credit Union on November 17, 1958, sponsored by the Soo Cooperative Company. Soo Co-op Credit Union’s field of membership remained that way until 2015. With the closing of the Soo Cooperative Company, Soo Co-op Credit Union once again reorganized. Membership is open to anyone who lives, owns real estate, works, worships, or is educated in the State of Michigan and their immediate relatives.

The Sault Area Chamber of Commerce is looking to add some new Ambassadors to the Club. Ambassadors meet once a month on the first Tuesday of the month here at the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce. We discuss local events, activities, and news. We share what is learned at meetings with our businesses and the community. Ambassadors are also invited to all the Ribbon Cuttings of the Chamber to show support for new businesses in the community. Dues for Ambassadors are $25 per year but the amount made off of dues is donated to the organization of the Ambassador Club's choosing after a vote at the end of every year. The donation usually ends up being in the $500 range. Anyone can be a Ambassador just as long as you own or work for a business that is a Chamber Member. This is a great way to keep your business "in the loop" as to what's going on in our community.
If you have any other questions please feel free to give the Chamber a call at 906-632-3301 or email director@saultstemarie.org

Each year the Ambassadors choose 1 or 2 organizations/ causes that they donate their membership dues to. This year they chose two different recipients: The Chippewa County Animal Shelter and Hospice of the EUP. Pictured on the left is representatives from the Chippewa County Animal Shelter accepting the check from the Ambassadors and on the right is Tracey Holt accepting the check on behalf of Hospice of the EUP.

November Vaccination Lottery Winners Announced
|
|
SAULT STE. MARIE — November winners have been announced for Sault Tribe’s COVID-19 Rescue Act Vaccination Lottery. Three team member drawings and three tribal member drawings were by held, each winner receiving $5,000, for a total of $30,000 in November vaccination lottery prizes.
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors established a COVID-19 Rescue Act Vaccination Lottery, which will be held every month through April 2022, to encourage tribal members and team members to get vaccinated to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
November tribal member lottery winners were Keith Landreville, Jesse Rhom and Courtney Zudell.
Zudell is from Otter Lake, Mich., a small village half in lower Michigan. “I am so thankful for winning the money before Christmas,” she said. “I have three kids ranging from 1-and-a-half to 9 years old and this will help me make their Christmas everything they deserve. I’ve never won anything like this so I am beyond grateful.”
Zudell said it wasn’t difficult to get a vaccine despite living “in the middle of nowhere.” She said, “I work in the medical field so luckily it wasn’t hard. I had to drive about 30 minutes to get the appointment but since I live in the middle of nowhere, everywhere is about a 25-30 minute drive.”
Landreville, of New Hope, Minn., said it “was an awesome surprise to be one of the lucky vaccination lottery winners.” He added, “I might be spending a little extra for the family members on the nice list this year.”
Rhom is from Cullman, Ala. “I believe it’s an absolute blessing to have received this lottery, especially around the holiday season,” he said. “While the primary purpose of the vaccine is to protect yourself and others from COVID, I feel that the lottery can be helpful to provide an additional incentive to become vaccinated.”
Team members winning the $5,000 vaccination lottery for November were Susan Snyder, Jessica Marble and Richard Dill, front desk worker at the Kewadin Casino Hotel in the Sault.
Marble, a Radiologist at the Sault Tribe Health Center, said she was overwhelmed with gratitude. “Random Acts of kindness are on the way,” she said. “Thank you and Merry Christmas to all!”
To enter the vaccination lottery, participants must complete and submit only one entry form on the tribe’s website, saulttribe.com. Eligible participants will automatically qualify for the next month’s drawings if they did not win during the prior month.
To be eligible to participate in the lottery, tribal members and team members must be 18 and older as of the entry date. Drawing winners must provide proof they received at least one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccination as of the date the entry form was submitted. Tribal member drawing winners must submit proof of their enrollment in the tribe as of their entry form submission date and winning date. Team member drawing winners must submit proof of their employment with the tribe as of their entry form submission date and winning date.
Tribal members who are also team members are eligible to enter both drawing categories and are eligible to win up to one prize from each drawing category. All other eligible participants may win only once.
The vaccination lottery drawing is being administered by the independent third-party accounting firm, Dennis, Gartland & Niergarth. To view the complete vaccination lottery rules and complete the lottery entry form, please go to https://fs29.formsite.com/SaultT/bpxrit2ewm/index.html beginning Nov. 5.
The vaccination lottery program is funded with the tribe’s American Rescue Plan Act state and local fiscal recovery funds and other federally approved vaccination funding received by the tribe.

DAFTER, Michigan (December 16, 2021) — The severe storm system that moved through the Midwest caused power outages for one-third of Cloverland Electric Cooperative’s membership across its Eastern Upper Peninsula service territory. Extreme winds caused the widespread outage event that started Wednesday evening and gradually increased to over 10,000 outages by noon in all EUP five counties. Cloverland advises members without power by 8 p.m. to activate medical back-up plans and make alternative arrangements to ensure overnight safety. Due to the severity of the windstorm across the Midwest, assistance from mutual aid crews is extremely limited and the cooperative expects restoration efforts to extend to Saturday.
“We know that going without power is extremely difficult, particularly overnight with no exact certainty of restoration times,” says Cloverland President and CEO Mike Heise. “We appreciate the understanding of our members and their patience, understanding and support for our crews working tirelessly in harsh weather conditions.”
All Cloverland crews across five divisions are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. One mutual aid crew has been secured to assist with restoration efforts. Crews will be working round the clock as those who worked through last night will be coming off safety rest, and other crews will be mandated to take safety rest by midnight tonight. Broken poles and trees on power lines are the primary causes.
“Storm recovery becomes lengthy when it is especially difficult to get additional help from mutual aid when the storm system hit the entire Midwest,” says Cloverland’s Director of Operations, Paul Warner. “All utilities are in the same circumstance, so we’ll rely on our dedicated line crews to get the job done.”
Cloverland members need to consider alternate arrangements as necessary to ensure their safety during this extended outage that could extend into Saturday. Those who depend on electricity for medical equipment should continue an emergency back-up plan for alternate sources of power or alternate lodging. Members with unmet, non-emergency needs should call 2-1-1. Members are also encouraged to check on their neighbors.
Cloverland Electric reminds the public to stay clear of downed power lines and report them by calling 1-800-562-4953 or local law enforcement agencies. Cloverland encourages members with internet access or mobile data to stay tuned to www.cloverland.com and Cloverland Electric’s Facebook page for latest updates on outages and restoration efforts. Next outage update provided at 8 a.m.
Cloverland Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned utility located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. With over 4,000 miles of line and 43,000 meters, Cloverland serves 34,000 residential, commercial and industrial members in Chippewa, Mackinac, Luce, Schoolcraft and Delta counties.
