Message from Magnus

One of the central themes in the Samueli School of Engineering is that by teaming up and working together we are able to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. This is particularly pertinent in the research domain. Our recent inclusion as the only West Coast university in the U.S. Army Automotive Research Center is a testament to the breadth, quality and focus of the coordinated research efforts pursued in the school in areas such as autonomous systems and control theory, advanced materials and additive manufacturing, and efficient and sustainable power generation.

We’ve been very productive this fall in the Samueli School, so please take a few minutes to read this month’s featured news.

Best,

Magnus Egerstedt, Ph.D.

Samueli School engineer uncovers dislocation patterns in deformed materials

Did you ever wonder why your spoon, which bent while scooping ice cream, could never be perfectly put back to its original shape? It has to do with plasticity, a material’s permanent deformation in response to mechanical force, in this case stainless steel.
