Neighbors from all corners of the Canyon gathered at the Besant Lodge on the evening of Nov. 10th for the first Annual Meeting of the BCNA since 2020.
Our first post-pandemic annual gathering featured lots of neighbors catching up on local issues as they munched on tasty pizza from OneStopEat, home-baked triple-chocolate shortbreads by local baking maven Allison Brooker and other local delicacies.
Hollywood Police Dept. Sr. Lead Officer Heather Mata detailed our canyon's security situation and in particular her concern over the rise of life-threatening fentanyl overdoses in our part of town.
Congressman Adam Schiff caught us up on election news, recent progress made by the Jan. 6 Committee and his interest in adopting a rescue husky.
Hollywood Orchard representatives Larry Markes and Angela Gygi gave an update on the Orchard-sponsored mural project at Cheremoya Elementary. They are raising funds to start on the second of four panels that will decorate the school's outdoor patio and eating area and expressed gratitude to the BCNA for our donation. (Scroll down for more info on the Mural)
Other meeting topics included enhancing Beachwood Drive stop signs in the village and at the Scenic intersection, both of which have been the scenes of car/pedestrian accidents; traffic signal timing at Franklin/Beachwood and Franklin/Gower (maybe a left turn arrow for southbound Gower cars); and the desire of many Beachwood residents to re-institute sidewalk dining outside the Beachwood Cafe!

Coexisting with Cougars
This is a YouTube video of a meeting put together by the National Wildlife Federation on living near cougar habitat. Because of P-22's recent attack on a neighborhood dog, many Beachwood dog owners attended the event via Zoom and found it helpful. The incident was discussed in detail in the latter half of the presentation.
The Cougar Conservancy has a conflict hotline: 800-930-1087 Please watch and share with your neighbors.

In Loving Memory
Terry Houlihan
9-6-1959 to 10-6-2022

Terry passed away at home on October 6, but it may just as well have been yesterday. He lived on Beachwood since 1989, and he gave boxing lessons and life lessons to dozens of neighbors through the years. He will be missed by many.

Tovaangar & Griffith Park
by Kate Martin Rowe for Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust
Long before concert-goers trekked to the Greek Theatre and tourists jammed the road to the observatory, and before picnickers sprawled out on lawns by their bouncy houses and festooned piñatas, the land we now call Griffith Park was home to the Tongva people. Historians now believe as many as two or three Tongva settlements were located in Griffith Park.
In this series, we have highlighted lesser known origins behind some of L.A.’s most iconic places and public lands, but for this post we acknowledge the very first displaced peoples of this land — Indigenous Californians.
For thousands of years before Europeans arrived, the Tongva and other tribes inhabited the oak-tree covered grasslands and hillsides of Southern California. Read on...
This great article and the photos within are published by permission from the author and from the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. After reading the article, perhaps you will be inspired to donate to their great work. Check them out at https://www.lanlt.org/

Please Support our Local Mural Project!
|
Hollywood Orchard is working with the local artist Elkpen to create a natural and cultural history of Los Angeles in the form of four murals that will cover 3 buildings on the campus of Cheremoya Elementary, a title 1 school at the base of Beachwood Canyon. The murals will not only beautify the school grounds, but also extend into educational programming that will give the children a deeper understanding of where they live and their connection to the natural world. Mural #1 is completed now! Please follow our Facebook Page for updates
The first wall of Cheremoya mural project has been funded by generous grants from Hollywood United Neighborhood Council. Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association, The Oaks Neighborhood Association, and many private donors. We are grateful for the community support. Will you donate before 2022 is over? We are a 501 c 3 so your contributions are tax deductible.

Top photo is Riona, under Riona is Remie
These sweet happy Siberian Husky girls, about 9 months old. Remie and her sister Riona were beyond out of time at the Downey shelter. Maureen Delaney was so sad two red Siberian pups just like them didn’t make it out of the shelter the week before so Delaney’s Dog pulled them to safety just in the nick of time. Remie and Riona are in the care of Delaney’s Dog and ready for adoption! They do not need to be adopted together. They have been fully vaccinated and are already spayed. If you have any questions about Remie or Riona, please contact Delaney's Dog at delaneysdog@gmail.com.

Dear Park Volunteer,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Griffith Park and myself, we would like to thank you for taking the time out of your busy Monday afternoon and come out to the park to help pick up trash. We know this task seems like it is never-ending, but your efforts really do have a positive impact. Not only does each area we focus on get cleaner, but we are also an inspiration and an example to the park visitor on how they should take care of the park.
Our next planned clean-up day is Monday, December 12th at 2:00 p.m. at Crystal Springs Picnic Area (see map above). Please place date and time on your calendar.
Thank you again for all your efforts to keep our beautiful park clean.
