President's Message

Melissa Barbosa, P.E., M.ASCE

ASCE Los Angeles Section President

Hello ASCE Civils,

In October we officially kicked off the new ASCE year and the Annual October Celebration was unique and different this year. It was great to see everyone in person. The National Conference held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim was a hit – highlighting the new era of infrastructure.

Time is going really quick, busy at work, building our new teams, collaborating on projects; guess what it’s already December 2022 and the holidays are here! It is that time of year when most of us step back, and take a moment to reflect on our lives, our careers, and particularly our families and friends. It is a time to thank those around you who play an important role in your life and instill some of the energy that keeps you moving forward.

I would like to take this moment to thank each of you for all your support and wish every one of you a great Holiday Season! Enjoy the food, enjoy your loved ones, and be prepared for a great lineup of ASCE events in 2023.

ASCE Air Transport Technical Group (ATTG) - Los Angeles World Airports Capital Improvement Program II Presentation

ASCE ATTG hosted the Los Angeles World Airports Capital Improvement Program II presentation at the Proud Bird Restaurant by LAX on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. It was interesting to hear from LAWA's chief development officer. A Look Ahead for the Sacramento Section

As we emerge from COVID, we’re stronger in some respects and weaker in others. This year, we turn our focus to strengthening in areas we know need improvement and celebrating what’s gone right.

The Sacramento Section has a lot to celebrate! Our Golze Scholarship team has raised an astounding $159,900 this past year to help students in our area get an amazing education and fortify the industry with much-needed talent.

History & Heritage Committee Update

One of the major goals of the HHC is to increase the recognition of the Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks (HCELs) and encourage the nomination of new HCELs in our state. California currently has 15 National HCELs, and over 70 local HCELs, but there are many more historic civil engineering projects that are worthy of being nominated. Two that are in the nominating process for National HCEL status are Crystal Springs Dam in the San Francisco Section and Route 66 in the Los Angeles Section.
