Don started as the executive director of the Fenn College Alumni Association (now Cleveland State University). He worked in development in Cleveland at the American Heart Association, University of Michigan and Dartmouth College’s regional offices, and Case-Western Reserve University. He started Campbell & Company in 1976 with Edith Falk and had the foresight to create an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 1985 so that all employees would directly benefit from their work. Throughout his life, he estimated that he was engaged in programs and campaigns that generated more than $3 billion in philanthropy.
Don retired from active management of the firm in 2006, but never stopped being committed to the firm and the profession. He served as a member of the TKE Foundation's executive committee and volunteered as an advisor to the University of Houston's Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Chicago Hope Academy, Chicago Maritime Society and a new Rock Steady program in Wilmette, Ill. He was chair of numerous nonprofit boards and of the United Way of Chicago's development committee. In 2019, he donated $1.5 million to create the Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI. You can learn more about the first appointed Chair here.
