President's Message

As another year comes to a close, and we spend time with family and friends, I want to wish you all a happy holiday season. It seems like we just started our fall courses, but here we are at the end of the semester! As usual, our talented, knowledgeable coordinators offered a variety of interesting courses. We owe them a huge thank you for enriching our lifelong learning journey. I have a phrase that resonates with me: “Stay curious.” Our wonderful coordinators help us all to do just that.

To paraphrase an old saying; one semester closes and another begins. The catalog for second semester will be available in mid-December and registration begins on January 8th. Classes start at the end of January and so it goes.

If you are traveling south or west for the winter, remember that ALL can travel with you via zoom or hybrid. Also, won’t you tell your neighbor, spouse, friends, or family about ALL and encourage them to join? We even have gift cards available for that person on your list who enjoys learning new things. Check our website, capecodall.org for more information.

Lastly, don’t forget the Holiday Potluck is on Sunday, December 10th. There is more information in this newsletter about time and location. Sign up and come and share some good food and conversation before the month gets too busy. The food is always delicious!

Happy Holidays!

Roger Shoemaker Teaches Theater Appreciation

Roger has a BA in Dramatic Literature and an MFA in Directing from Catholic University. He taught theater and directed productions at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and spent 25 years as the Dean for the Arts at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, outside Boston. He enjoyed 10 fabulous post-retirement years teaching and directing at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. In the Spring of 2024 Roger will be offering a course on Sophpcles" timeless play, "Antigone".a play he has acted in and directed .

Roger Shoemaker became involved in theater in the second grade and remains energized by it decades later. His eyes light up and he smiles as he talks about his recently completed ALL course.

For 12 weeks he and his class have happily explored the ins and outs of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” through readings, discussions, video clips and (of course) theater anecdotes.  In the Spring of 2024, Roger notes excitedly, he plans to bring the same passion and expertise to exploring Sophocles” timeless play “Antigone”.

Roger draws on a well of deep experience. He has run a professional theater, worked as an actor, as a director, and for decades served as Dean of the Arts at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, an internationally recognized independent residential arts high school. He also dabbled in television but found it had “too many machines”.

“Experiencing theater,” he observes, “is about performance versus textual analysis. It’s about ‘Did it work?’ How the play is cast, directed and acted,” he continues, “makes each production unique.” Video clips shown during class illustrate how you can hear and see the same words but feel like you are going to an entirely different play.

Roger recalls a highlight of his career in 2005 when he directed a production at New York City’s Carnegie Hall,  He describes the event as an elaborate “dog and pony show” with a ballet, musical theatre and an orchestra, and chorus of 300 people on stage. The event honored the retiring Head of Walnut Hill and drew a full house.

Another accomplishment was being invited to help establish the ongoing theatre program at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School.

Rogers’ worst professional memory might have been being pressured to direct a play while at Trinity College that 'BOMBED'. “I didn’t think the script was good but agreed to direct it. I just couldn’t "make it happen. It was SO boring! And BORING IS THE ONE THING you cannot do as a director. After that I never directed a play that I did not like.”

We are lucky that ALL falls into the category of things Roger enjoys being a part of. He views ALL as a great institution, takes courses, and is a member of the Curriculum Committee. He has an offering this spring and plans to offer future courses around how to enjoy theater in the fall. He also plans to enjoy his family and take a driving trip to Florida.

At the last meeting of this semester’s course, Roger and several members of his “Twelfth Night” class discussed what working with the play was like. A link to that discussion follows for those of you who would like a taste of what being in Roger’s class is like.

Consider giving to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund

It has been a December ALL tradition to collect donations for the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization. This fund provides financial assistance to Cape Cod residents who need help with housing, utilities, food, medical bills, etc. Those helped by the Needy Fund do not receive cash; payments are made directly to vendors through a voucher system. If you need assistance or are aware of someone who needs assistance call the Needy Fund at 508‑778‑5661 or 800‑422‑1446.

Before Zoom entered our lives, we collected donations in our ALL classrooms and also had a donation box in the office. Since we cannot facilitate collecting in-person donations at this time, we hope members will do so on their own.

Donations can be made online by visiting their website:
Cape Cod Times Needy Fund

or by mailing a check to

Cape Cod Times Needy Fund

PO Box 36

Our members have been very generous in the past, and we hope you will consider supporting the Needy Fund this year.
