Michelle Roh

Identifying the best malaria drugs for pregnant patients

Michelle Roh, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar at IGHS, was awarded a K99/R00 grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study why the anti-malarial drugs sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine seem to effect birthweight differently when given to pregnant people in different regions of Africa.

Patience Afulani

Partnering with providers in Africa to improve maternal care

Patience Afulani, MD, PhD, is studying the mental well-being of health care providers in Africa and identifying strategies to reduce the effects of implicit and explicit bias. She is working with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, the Navrongo Health Research Center and health departments in Kenya and Ghana. This effort is part of the Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience study, which aims to improve patient care during labor and delivery in Kenya and Ghana.

New UC center will test approaches to blunt the effects of climate change

A new UC program called the Global Center on Climate Change, Water, Energy, Food, and Health Systems will address the health impacts of climate change in the climate-vulnerable communities in Jordan’s Azraq Basin. Margaret Handley, PhD, MPH, will lead the implementation science component of the research strategy to implement pilot projects.

Paul Wesson

Ensuring individuals leaving prison get HIV care

Paul Wesson, PhD, received a $300,000, two-year Ending the HIV Epidemic administrative supplement from the National Institutes of Mental Health to study how people emerging from incarceration can best be connected to HIV care.

New UCSF DITHub to address global health disparities through data and tech

On October 16, IGHS launched the Data, Innovation and Technology Hub (DITHub) at UCSF. DITHub aims to identify and address global health threats and disparities by introducing precision public health strategies, building robust data pipelines and optimizing data use.

Empowering women and girls in public health data science

IGHS will work with the University of Nairobi to create a machine learning and data science training program for girls and young women focused on public health leadership. The program, called Enabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise (ENGAGE), will recruit over 800 girls and young women in six primarily rural Kenyan regions.
