Next Monday, December 11 at 10:00am, the City Council Finance Committee is holding an oversight hearing on the November Budget Plan that included the Mayor's first round of 5% budget cuts.
As a part of the #WHY15 campaign, Nonprofit New York, Human Service Council, and other coalition partners are preparing sample testimony for our members impacted by the most recent cuts and the swiftly approaching second round of 5% cuts coming in January 2024. Please see below for language you can customize and use for your own budget testimony.
We also encourage you to join Nonprofit Staten Island and the over 200 organizations who have signed onto the open letter to demonstrate the nonprofit sector’s united opposition to Mayor Adams’ unprecedented, arbitrary budget cuts that came without transparency or consultation with nonprofit providers.

We are thrilled to share that we had the honor of participating in the NYCC Comptroller's MWBE Roundtable. Gratitude to our valued partners, including Council Member Kamillah Hanks and The Staten Island Business Outreach Center (SIBOC), for their instrumental role in bringing these vital resources and discussions to Staten Island.
We recognize that supporting more Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) on Staten Island in securing contracts with NYC government is a significant achievement for our community.
Looking ahead, we are planning to follow up with the needs of nonprofits and explore how to better collaborate with MWBEs. Stay tuned as we will be hosting SIBOC in the coming year.

To prepare New York City for increased heavy rain, Rebuild by Design, One Architecture & Urbanism, the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Housing and Recovery Operations, and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection are launching an open call for individuals and organizations to participate in the Rainproof NYC Working Groups. The working groups, co-facilitated and composed of NYC agency staff and community leaders, will meet regularly from January through June to identify and recommend strategies and policies to adapt to increased heavy rainfall.
They are looking for community leaders who have a diversity of experiences and backgrounds to take part in these working groups.
Applications are due on December 11, 2023 and selected participants will be notified on or around December 19.
NOTE: Individuals are welcome to apply to more than one working group; however, they will only be selected to participate in one. A single organization may have representatives in more than one working group.
These working group positions are volunteer opportunities and are not official appointments by the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, or the NYC Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery Operations.
Rebuild will provide non-government participants with a stipend of $1500 at the completion of this process.

ATTENTION Cultural institutions: There is a grant opportunity through the Public Humanities Projects program! This initiative supports projects that bring humanities ideas to life for diverse audiences via engaging public programming. Emphasizing engagement with humanities scholarship, projects explore significant themes in history, literature, ethics, and art history.
Awards are designed to reach broad and diverse public audiences in non-classroom settings across the United States. The program supports projects in three categories—Exhibitions, Historic Places, and Humanities Discussions—offering funding at two levels: Planning and Implementation. Consider integrating complementary components, like a museum exhibition accompanied by a website or mobile app.
Project topics can be international, national, regional, or local in focus. Local projects should connect to broader themes or historical questions of regional or national relevance. If your project doesn't address wider regional or national concerns, explore local funding sources, such as state humanities councils.
Award amounts vary based on the project’s scope and expected audiences, with a special encouragement for small and mid-sized organizations to apply. Tailor your humanities project for specific groups, including families, youth (K-12 students in informal educational settings), underserved communities, and veterans.
Don't miss this opportunity to bring your cultural institution's vision to life and apply today: https://www.neh.gov/grants/public/public-humanities-projects
