CDC Children's Art Featured on Notecards Presented by Foundation
Child Development Center children ages 1 to 5 displayed their creativity and talent by creating art for notecards, which are available for the public to purchase through WNC Foundation. They painted, colored drawings, assembled paper collages, and more in this unique and precious collection of cards.
Observatory 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Makes an Ideal Holiday Gift
In honor of 20 celestial years, WNC’s Jack C. Davis Observatory is presenting a limited edition .999 fine silver coin, showcasing a stunning portrayal of JCDO under the star-strewn night sky. Consider this silver coin when choosing gifts this holiday season. All proceeds from sales of the coin support the sustainability of the observatory.
Ukulele, Self-Defense, LinkedIn 101, Screenwriting Classes Available in 2024
Continuing Education’s classes ranging from Intro to the Swiss Alphorn, to Screenwriting 101, to Women’s Self-Defense, LinkedIn 101, Ukulele for Beginners, and more are a great way for individuals to personalize the start of 2024. Interactive Driver's Education Course
on Jan. 2-5 Perfect for Teens
Western Nevada College’s driver’s education course teaches teen drivers through an interactive instruction program offered through the Continuing Education program. Register your child for the Jan. 2-5 class for $95. The class meets from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with a 30-minute break for lunch.
Many Reasons for Students to Attend Leadership Summit in the Spring
Western Nevada College students are encouraged to attend the 2024 Student Leadership Summit on Friday, April 12. The summit will be a great opportunity for students to participate in a student panel discussion, learn leadership skills from breakout presentations and notable speakers, win raffle prizes and receive free swag. Lunch will also be provided.

Outreach & Access Team Recognized by Nevada Association of School Boards
The Nevada Association of School Boards (NASB) has recognized Western Nevada College at its annual awards banquet for providing dual enrollment opportunities for rural high school students. Specifically, NASB said that WNC was honored because of its stellar work for supporting access to higher education for students across Nevada. Churchill County School District nominated WNC for the award.
Aviation Program Lifts Off with New Course, Two Additional Instructors
Western Nevada College is taking its aviation program to new heights with the introduction of Commercial Pilot (AV 250) for the Spring 2024 Semester, adding to its existing Private Pilot (AV 110) and Instrument Pilot (AV 210) classes. Building on the excitement, WNC has brought on board two new instructors, Russell Smith and Frank Monack, each with a wealth of experience and expertise in the industry.
WNC's Higher Ed in Prison Program Celebrates Graduates, High GPAs
Western Nevada College's Higher Education in Prison Program celebrated nine Fall 2023 graduates who collectively earned a 3.898 GPA. They were recognized by WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe and other dignitaries at a commencement ceremony on Dec. 15 at Northern Nevada Correctional Center.
Conrad's Story on New Auto Mechanics Program Shared in NWCCU Newsletter
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) spotlighted Western Nevada College's new Certificate of Achievement Auto Mechanics program at Northern Nevada Correctional Center this month. "Automotive Mechanics Program in Prison Sparked by Partnership," prepared by Deb Conrad, WNC's Prison Education and Apprenticeship Program director, was shared in NWCCU's newsletter, the Beacon.

Professor Profiles: Student Experiences at JC Influenced Dr. Duerk to Teach Here
Dr. John Duerk is a political science instructor who started at Western Nevada College in 2022. As a student, he began higher education at a community college in Illinois and taught high school students before returning to graduate school. After teaching at a larger institution, he appreciates teaching at a smaller college like WNC so he can get to know people better. Winter Session Three-Week, Full-Credit Accelerated Courses Begin Jan. 2
Western Nevada College’s Winter Session's five-week classes began Dec. 18, but there still is time to take accelerated online classes after the holidays. The three-week courses start on Tuesday, Jan. 2, and conclude on Friday, Jan. 19. Courses are offered in Art, Core Humanities, History and Information Systems.

Keeps Women in for the Long Haul
Burned out from working in retail, Sarah Whelpley yearned for something more than a job … she craved a respected career. For Vanessa Maddox, job stability and a decent income attracted her to the profession, plus a desire to learn something new. They found what they were looking for in WNC’s Commercial Driver’s License program. And the timing couldn't be better as
the American Trucking Association recently reported a shortage of 60,000 drivers in the U.S., and some reports estimate that there will be a need for 160,000 drivers by 2030.

Spring 2024 semester will arrive at Western Nevada College before you know it. That’s why it’s important for new, continuing and returning students to register for classes as soon as they can. Spring semester starts on Monday, Jan. 22.

College Community Sends Condolences to UNLV Following Tragic Shootings
Western Nevada College students, faculty and staff provided their sympathy and well-wishes to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas following the tragic events that unfolded on the campus of their sister institution on Dec. 6. WNC’s college community provided heart-felt messages on a hand-created, heart-shaped card delivered in person by President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. The college also sent its condolences via social media.
Jack C. Davis Observatory to Reopen after Holidays
WNC’s Jack C. Davis Observatory is refreshing for the remainder of the year and will postpone its Saturday night Star Parties until 2024. The Star Parties will resume on Saturday night, Jan. 6, from dusk to 11 p.m. at 2269 Vanpatten Ave.
WNC Writing Coach Discusses New Book, 'Look for Something Good'
Looking for a book to read during the holidays or to start the new year, then look no further than one by author Robert Drews, a writing coach in the Academic Skills Center at Western Nevada College.
